The Automathico is a MIDI note generator based on looped mathematical calculations.
It's mainly build up from 3 parts:
A fairly small knob-automation recorder which lets you internally automate knob adjustments, a bit bigger part is saved for the rhythmic section and the main part of the display is saved for knobs and selectors for the 6 (almost) identical sequencers.
Two sequencers are for the main base (stable en-harmonic and chord (offset from en-harmonic scaled into the right scale and key).
The other four are for two separate sequencers for both pitch and velocity, so two different patterns can be created together following the same structure (enharmonics and chords).
These 6 sequencers are based on a sample&hold loop in which a series of mathematical calculations are put over the looping values. First a waveshaper, then a parabolic function and finally a math-algorithm like sine, tanh, power, square root. The sequencers all have their own clock-divider and sync-option to enforce recurring patterns and next to this the pitch and velocity sequencers have an extra feed option which allows to feed a value of another sequencer into it's loop via modulating math-functions. As last there is a dedicated LFO for each of the 6 sequencers to modulate one of the parameters, which, in different combinations can yield very interesting results as patterns evolve.
The rhythmic and melodic sections work together to assign the current pitch and velocity values to the note generators in arp-mode. When the switch is down, depending on whether the pitch-sequencer is playing between 0-25%, 25-50%, 50-75% or 75-100%, the most right, middle-left, middle-right, most right midi-note generators respectively will be triggered. As each of these can send on a different MIDI channel, each keyboard-range can be played by a different external synthesizer or sampler (VSTi or hardware).
Together this creates a very dynamic sequencer which can change the mood and rhythm with a single turn of a knob (if you turn the right knob for that of course).
You can use it to control both VSTi or hardware synthesizers or samplers (depending on the MIDI-routing capabilities of your MIDIhost, Cubase and Fruity Loops are for example known to do the job).
For more information, explanation, help and tips&tricks, download the zip and check the help-file.
Next to that, just have fun with it! My pleasure is making music and if I can share that pleasure, I am happy.
(P.S. Below in the comments there is a link to a 16-VST pack with my latest plugins, two which I made to combine with automathico to be able to easier route MIDI channels to different VSTi. The rest I added as these were too big to go directly to my free-VST thread and I wanted these be uploaded anyway)
Would really like to try this VST. I couldn't load it into SaviHost or MiniHost.
XL2
Hi XL2,
I've just tried it myself in savihost and it just runs on my computer (surprisingly, as my computer has been crashing more and more last week when I open programs. Waiting for my new computer for a week now, still hasn't been delivered... ) :(
Getting my blofeld to work, was just setting the midi-output of savihost to the right midi-output of my soundcard.
Don't forget to enter the full name in your savihost-file: "automathico V1"
btw, are you running 64bit or 32bit? As this VST will probably only run on 32..
also, people can also visit my free-vst(i) thread on www.synthforum.com, loads of different sequencers, synthesizers and effects:
http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/showthread.php?t=148955
Automathico now running fine. Really like the idea of looping math formulas. Looking into this further with amazement. System block diagram might help lessen the learning curve. And with MIDI output allowing for own sounds !
A system block-diagram might indeed be a good idea, I could add that to the help page (I read I wasn't allowed to change the plugin itself during the challenge, I may only fix bugs, but adding things to the help file should be ok, right?)
About the MIDI output.. I don't really understand that question... as this VST doesn't make any sound at all.. it's MIDI only and it's first goal already is to use your own hardware/software synthesizers/samplers.. (or use it to control the SIK-FXD multi-glitch-effect, posted in my thread on synthforum (25 effects, can be played all together, trigger with dedicated midi-note, velocity controls main parameter)
ok, I did not really find a way to quickly add the diagram, but here it is on my synthforum thread:
http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=83593&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1352507110
The link isn't to the AutoMathico diagram. I'd still like a diagram to help in understanding the overall flow. The plugin is as useful as it is complex. A diagram would be of much help in understanding how to use.
I really like how AutoMathico outputs MIDI. That way I can try out many sound generators.
Great VST.
not sure you've received the message about the diagram, but by this.. it's uploaded..
http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/showpost.php?p=1563434&postcount=195
here I've got a file with 16 new other vst(i) I've made last months. Some fairly simple, some a bit more complex. Featuring sequencers, synthesizers, effects and midi-tools (useful for combining with Automathico and splitting up midi-channels, changing it's midi-channel and send it to different vst's inside your host.)
btw the vst-pack-link is online for 1 month only! so get it while you can...
and ps. Trickshot V1.3 was my former idea as entry for the DC12 challenge, before I had the idea about the automathico..Haven't tried it out, but might well be an awesome company for the automathico, now I think about it..
diagram is also uploaded as screenshot of the vst, you should be able to see it.,.. as I can see it myself right now
For the life of my I can't get this plugin to show up in Cubase 6.5. Windows 7 64 bit running 32 bit Cubase.
I've tested the plugin on a windows7 computer of a friend of mine running cubase5, which worked.
I've put the plugin (instrument!) in the 'others' folder within the vst-folder in programs(x86).
Then pressed F11 in cubase and loaded the automathico in the screen somewhere. (sorry, I don't have a lot of experiences using cubase. Up till now I created my tracks in one go, without post-mastering the recorded tracks as my computer can't load enough wav-tracks to post-master a track. So my choice of vst-host is mostly based on MIDI and audio routing capabilities for vsts, which pushed me towards fruityloops. And.... WOOHOO!! while I was writing this my new computer got delivered!! ok, so ehm, from now, I WILL be able to load (any) samples for post-mastering ghehehe :P
but ehm, where did I strayed off?
ah! Press F11, and then you should be able to load the automathico VST overthere. After that, load a VST instrument and select the automathico as midi-input.
is the problem fixed?
essentially yes, thanks for the follow up. it was indeed my blacklist that was the problem. I think i'm about to do a system reinstall though as i'm overdue, and the latest cubase update just effed me up a bit.
thanks again for the help!
Thnx SirSicksic for the system diagram. With a device this complex its very welcome. Thanks
I've uploaded update V1.02 to my synthforum webpage.
you can download it using this link:
http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=83924&d=1353700926
updates includes deleting of an old, lost module, which produced crashes in usine and XT. Also, the poly-knob recorder is already included. But this is covered with an image which will disappear after the contest (ok, not exactly, but I didn't want to waste any more of our beloved CPU on this..). Because of this and the loss of the old project, the mono-knob recorder also has a bit different layout.
Next to this I've added several presets with explanation in the explanation-box (was already there, but didn't contain any helpful text yet.. haha)
Also fixed some little z-order layer mistakes.

Hi and thanks for your interesting contribution. Can't seem to load either Automathico V1 or FX in Ableton Live. I get infinite SynthEdit boxes: "Can't load SE plugin: The specified module could not be found. {vstpath}\Automathico V1\SystemCommand.sem and it goes on forever (or at least beyond my patience :)
Also, the zip file in the link to the 1.02 file is corrupt - I can't extract it with latest WinRar.
Any clues to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!
ehm, have you read the comment above your comment? It tells you where to upload V1.02 which has several bugfixes... also, I haven't includes the FX version anymore as this modules should be loaded in the instrument panel anyways (a friend first told me that he couldn't load midi-instruments on an instrument slot, but he did things wrong..so..that's why it's only as vst(i) now)
so... check the comment above.. or use this link (it's the same)

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I read the comment above - but it seems like the archive is broken. I've tried Winzip, windows 7 built-in unpacker and Winrar, but both says it's broken or "unknown method / no files to extract"
I used the best compression method used in 7-zip to zip the file. WINrar/zip isn't able to do a compression this high. I needed to as winzip would create a file larger then 4mb, while the synthforum website only allows for max 4mb zip's.
So download 7-zip to get the file (and have a far better zip-program on your computer)

works great on win7 x32 but not working on my main soundpc with win7 x64 and a x32 host.
Any chance you can help me there?
which version do you have? because I had placed a fix. Only one problem... the new account I used on synthforum, as my old account was filled up to the roof, has been deleted. and after numerous times asking they've still not cleared out my old, totally filled up, account.. so I have kind of no space to place any VST right now..
also I'm a bit pissed as the only thing I was uploading lately were free vst(i)'s... so yeah, my good will is a bit damaged lately..
Hello SirSickSik,
I have the latest version 1.02 but the previous version also worked on the x32 machine, running Cubase.
Now when I load it in on the x64 machine in the x32 daw version it crashes my DAW while loading Cubase.
But with all my old x32 plugins I don't have that problem and they are working fine.
I can get over it :) But I really like your plugin and would love to toy around with it.
Now I can on the other machine, but I hoped to use it in my main setup.
Hi, I can't load it in Reaper x64 (4.61).
