Butch Vig Drums is a powerful virtual instrument that delivers the signature, hard-hitting drum sounds of legendary producer and Garbage drummer, Butch Vig. As part of Native Instruments' streamlined Play Series, this Kontakt-based library is designed to get you from inspiration to production-ready tracks with unparalleled speed. It's not just a collection of samples; it's an instrument that captures the unique blend of analog grit and digital polish that has defined some of the most iconic rock and alternative albums of the last three decades, including Nirvana's Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream.
The sound of Butch Vig Drums is a result of a meticulous production process that began at the legendary Studio A in Hollywood's United Recording. Here, a full drum kit was recorded using a blend of classic studio techniques. The magic, however, happened back at Vig's home studio, "GrungeIsDead," where he applied his signature processing. Each sample was run through a bespoke chain of analog and digital preamps, compressors, stompboxes, and effects, resulting in a series of drum sounds that are uniquely punchy, saturated, and full of character. The library is ideal for producers seeking to quickly infuse their rock, pop, and electronic tracks with a professionally processed, larger-than-life drum sound.
The user-friendly interface makes it easy to unleash the power of the sounds. The main page provides a straightforward layout with six assignable Macro Controls that allow for quick, impactful tweaks to the sound, from adding saturation and grit to shaping the overall tone. Beyond the intuitive interface, Butch Vig Drums offers deep-editing capabilities. You can swap out individual drum sounds, adjust their pitch and velocity response, and fully customize the effects chain for each pad. The included library of MIDI patterns—all created by Butch Vig himself—provides an excellent starting point for grooves that can be triggered directly or dragged and dropped into your DAW for further editing.
