Cavitation Fractures is a free distortion effect built around fluid-dynamics-inspired behaviour and pressure collapse events.
The point was not to make another static overdrive or another "warmth" thing. It was to make something that reacts more like a system getting pushed into unstable behaviour. So instead of one fixed distortion curve, it generates fracture events from transients and then lets those events move, collapse, and smear around in different ways.
A lot of the time it sounds half broken, well, most of the time, and that is the point.
It is somewhere in the area of snare-wire filth, torn top-end, unstable crackle, and animated breakup. On a lot of material it sounds wrong. On some material it sounds exactly right. I mostly use it when I want dirt and motion that ordinary distortion does not really give me.
The controls are built around shaping that behaviour rather than pretending it is a normal saturation plugin:
- Rupture changes how aggressively fracture events are triggered
- Mass changes the weight and density of the moving material
- Friction changes how it drags and settles
- Snarl pushes it toward rougher and more unstable behaviour - at low levels it tries to frequency follow
- Velvet smooths some of the harsher edges
- Mix and Output make it easier to keep things usable.
It is a good fit for:
- drums that need to crack instead of just flatten
- bass lines that need more edge without losing too much note center
- synth parts that need movement, or needs destruction
- transitions, impacts, and damaged textures
- anyone who likes effects that feel a bit unstable but still a bit controllable.
It is probably not a good fit for:
- transparent analog-style saturation
- polite mix bus enhancement
- a single fixed distortion character with no movement.
A big part of what makes it interesting to me is that the animated background is tied to the same idea as the sound. The visuals are not there just to make it look busy. They are part of the same behavior from another angle.
