The Make Noise DXG is a Dual Stereo Lowpass Gate, expanding on the classic "West Coast" synthesis element for the modern stereo Eurorack system. A Lowpass Gate (LPG) is a unique circuit, famously pioneered by Don Buchla, that combines the functions of a Voltage-Controlled Amplifier (VCA) and a Voltage-Controlled Filter (VCF). The result is a sound that is not just amplified but also has its high-frequency content shaped simultaneously, mimicking the natural decay characteristics of acoustic instruments. The DXG brings this organic, plucky sound to the stereo realm with two independent, vactrol-based LPGs that can be used separately or as a linked pair.
Each of the two channels on the DXG features a stereo signal path with Left and Right inputs and outputs, making it ideal for processing stereo oscillators like the XPO or stereo effects like the Mimeophon. The core controls include LEVEL for the initial signal amount and DAMP, which adjusts the brightness or filtering of the gate. The module's dynamic response is shaped by incoming CV, but the signature feature is the STRIKE input. A trigger or gate signal patched to STRIKE produces a sharp, percussive "pluck" with a natural-sounding decay, the length of which is determined by the control settings. A linking switch allows Channel 1's controls to command both channels for perfectly synchronized stereo operation. With its Auxiliary inputs, the DXG can also be used for creative mixing and side-chaining effects, making it a versatile stereo dynamics and timbre-shaping tool.
