Echotopia - Experimental Soundscape Designer

What is Echotopia

Echotopia is a desktop soundscape editor and long-term research project dedicated to exploring new ways of creating acoustic environments - also known as soundscapes, ambiences, or atmos. It focuses on how sound behaves in space, how environments influence perception, and how creators can think spatially rather than linearly when designing audio.

The project builds on more than a decade of experience developing soundscape tools (including the DMDJ mobile app) and over 30 years of work in game audio and sound design. Echotopia is designed for professionals, hobbyists, and curious minds who want to experiment with immersive sound and help shape the future of soundscape creation.

Against Sameness - For Sound That Belongs

Speed has become the dominant metric in modern soundscape creation. Templates, generators, and pre-baked solutions promise instant results - but too often, that speed comes at the cost of identity. Different projects begin to sound the same. Different creators are reduced to the same aesthetic decisions. Productivity is optimized, but creativity quietly erodes.

Echotopia stands firmly on a different point of that spectrum.

Its goal is not to replace artistic intent with automation, but to amplify it. Echotopia is designed to evolve into a fast, fluid soundscape production tool - without forcing creators into predefined sonic outcomes. Instead of locking users into fixed loops or stylistic signatures, it provides systems, behaviors, and acoustic logic that adapt to each creator's world, narrative, and aesthetic.

In Echotopia, speed serves expression - not uniformity. The result is soundscapes that are efficient to build, yet unmistakably personal. Sound that doesn't just fill space, but belongs to the project it was created for.

Echotopia is not here to make soundscapes faster at the expense of creativity. It exists to make them faster without making them the same - so every creator can shape a world that truly sounds like their own.

A Tool for Exploration, Not a Black Box

Echotopia makes it possible to design, test, and iterate soundscapes quickly - without forcing users into rigid workflows or opaque automation. Storytellers can use it live to support narration, while sound designers, filmmakers, and game developers can explore different listener positions and render audio with spatially consistent acoustics.

Where Echotopia Fits

Echotopia is used across many creative and experimental fields, including:

  • Audio for media and content creation.
  • Film, animation, and games.
  • Audio drama.
  • Storytelling and live narration.
  • Tabletop RPGs, VTTs, and LARP.
  • Theatre and live performance.
  • Streaming and installations.
  • Escape rooms and themed spaces.
  • Wellness, meditation, and immersive environments.
  • Interior and spatial design.

Soundscapes are often the invisible foundation of immersion - yet traditionally difficult to produce. Linear DAWs require complex routing, manual automation, and repeated remixing just to change perspective. Hobbyists and storytellers are often limited to inflexible generators or repetitive loops. Echotopia exists to explore alternatives to those workflows.

The release of Echotopia marks a new era in creating soundscapes for traditional and emerging media. SoundFellas is committed to developing more specialized functionality in Echotopia, balancing the user experience for both professionals and hobbyists.

How Echotopia Works

Echotopia combines the visual clarity of a game level editor with ready-made sound behaviors that mimic how real-world sound sources act in space. A real-time acoustics engine calculates distance, propagation, reverberation, and inward occlusion to render how an environment sounds from any listener position.

The system uses convolution-based acoustics and open impulse response formats, allowing users to reuse the same acoustic spaces across multiple tools. Instead of automating dozens of parameters, users design environments and let the engine handle spatial consistency - freeing them to focus on experimentation and creative intent.

An Open Evolving Project

Echotopia is intentionally released as a free, honor-licensed project while it evolves. It is not positioned as a finished commercial DAW, but as a living platform for research, learning, and creative exploration. Updates, features, and content grow as the project grows.

Pro-Grade Core Content Library

Echotopia includes a large curated sound library produced by SoundFellas, featuring tens of thousands of royalty-free sounds designed for spatial use. Content is organized, immersive-ready, and usable both inside and outside Echotopia. The library is a separate component, allowing it to evolve independently of the application itself.

Download and Participate

Echotopia is free to download and fully functional. There are no artificial limitations - just an invitation to explore, experiment, and take part in an evolving soundscape research project.
