Yeah you can't call it free if a subscription is needed to get a lot of the value from it.

What effects made by others do I get with a subscription?

Are they any good or just the usual generic code?

Following a recent update, Formula is now 100% free and does not require an account. All the effects are bundled in the plugin and contributions can be made through Formula's Github repository: https://github.com/soundspear/formula
