The Harrison Tape Saturator is a dedicated software emulation of the 1/4" 2-track analog reel-to-reel tape machines common in 1970s recording studios. Designed for both individual track processing and mix bus applications, the plug-in reproduces the non-linear harmonic distortion, frequency response shifts, and mechanical artifacts characteristic of magnetic tape recording.

The processor functions by introducing even- and odd-order harmonics that thicken the low-frequency spectrum and smooth high-frequency transients. Beyond simple saturation, the plug-in models the physical inconsistencies of vintage hardware, providing adjustable controls for tape hiss, mechanical wow and flutter, and signal dropouts. The inclusion of variable tape speeds—ranging from high-fidelity 15/30 ips studio standards to 1 7/8 ips cassette speeds—allows for a broad palette of tonal colors, from subtle "glue" to significant lo-fi degradation.

Key Features

  • Comprehensive Fidelity Control: A five-grade Fidelity Selector and six speed settings (up to 60 ips) to define the base bandwidth and headroom.
  • Mechanical Emulation: Dedicated knobs for Flutter (pitch instability) and Dropouts (momentary signal loss) to replicate hardware wear and transport issues.
  • Harmonic Saturation: A Drive control to push the virtual tape into saturation, increasing harmonic density and natural tape compression.
  • Noise Modeling: Variable Hiss control based on the magnetic particle noise of physical tape formulations.
  • Workflow Integration: Includes input/output gain staging with visual metering and a curated library of presets for common mixing tasks.
