Magic Buss is a three-stage bus compressor running FET, VCA, and Vari-Mu in series - each stage with its own parallel blend knob, independent stereo link toggle, and L/R gain reduction meters. A six-band parametric EQ follows the compressor chain, and a tanh saturation stage adds tape and transformer density before the output trim. This is the chain that makes a mix behave.

$39. Perpetual license. Windows, macOS, Linux.

Three Stages. Three Characters. One Chain.

Most bus compressors give you one flavor and let you dial in how much. Magic Buss runs three genuinely different compression architectures in series and lets you control each one independently:

  • FET - Peak detector, hard knee, fast attack range (20µs - 800ms). Adds presence, grip, and forward energy. The punchy stage.
  • VCA - RMS detector, soft knee, Auto release mode. Clean, transparent glue. Makes elements feel like one record without adding color.
  • Vari-Mu - Program-dependent time constants, very soft knee, gentle ratios (1.5:1 to 6:1). Slow and warm. Inherently adds subtle even-harmonic content. This is the warmth stage - it sounds different from VCA or FET even at identical settings because the gain element character is fundamentally different.

Each stage has Threshold, Attack, Release, Ratio (selector), Makeup Gain, Mix, Link, and In/Out. All three always run in series. Bypass any you don't need.

Per-Stage Parallel Blend

The Mix knob on each compressor blends the compressed wet signal against the uncompressed dry signal at that stage only - not a master output blend. Set the FET to 20% for transient grip without squash. Push the VCA to 80% for serious glue. Keep the Vari-Mu at 35% for warmth without weight. Each stage is an independent parallel compression decision. The interactions between stages at different blend ratios are where this plugin lives.

Order Switch

Six permutations of the three stages. FET first means the peak detector reacts to the raw mix before anything else touches it. Vari-Mu first means the slow, warm stage shapes the signal before the faster compressors respond to it. The order fundamentally changes how the chain sounds - not a cosmetic option.

0 (default) FET VCA Vari-Mu
1 FET Vari-Mu VCA
2 VCA FET Vari-Mu
3 VCA Vari-Mu FET
4 Vari-Mu FET VCA
5 Vari-Mu VCA FET

Unlinked Stereo by Default - This Is the Differentiator

Every stage defaults to unlinked. Left and right each run fully independent detectors and gain computers. When the mix is uneven, each channel compresses on its own content. The GR meters for that stage show different readings - because they are doing different things. The stereo field responds more naturally. Width breathes instead of being locked uniformly across both channels.

Toggle linked on any stage independently for classic bus behavior on that stage while the others stay free. Mix and match: FET unlinked for transient openness, VCA linked for cohesion, Vari-Mu unlinked for warmth that moves with the content.

Six-Band Parametric EQ - After the Compressors

Shape the tone after the dynamics have already been handled. All six bands run after all three compressor stages:

  • HP - Butterworth highpass, Off/6/12/18/24 dB/oct, 20-500Hz.
  • Low - Switchable low shelf or bell, 20-500Hz, -12 to +12 dB.
  • Lo-Mid - Parametric bell, 50Hz-2kHz.
  • Hi-Mid - Parametric bell, 500Hz-16kHz.
  • High - Switchable high shelf or bell, 1kHz-22kHz, -12 to +12 dB.
  • LP - Butterworth lowpass, Off/6/12/18/24 dB/oct, 1kHz-22kHz.

All biquad IIR. Popup label shows precise values while adjusting. Q knob grays out on shelf mode. HP/LP slope selector includes Off - doubles as band enable.

Saturation Stage

Single Drive knob, 0-100%. After EQ, before output gain. Tanh waveshaper calibrated for tape and console transformer character. At 100% this adds density and harmonic richness - not overdrive. Most bus work sits between 10% and 40%. At 0% the stage is fully linear and adds zero latency. This is not decoration - at 15-25% it glues the top end in a way that three compressors alone don't.

Metering

  • Dual VU meters - output L and R, 300ms ballistic RMS.
  • Six GR meters - L and R per compressor stage (shows independent readings when unlinked).

Suggested Starting Points

  • All three stages In, Mix at 20-30% each, no EQ, saturation 0. Listen to what the chain does at light parallel blend before you reach for anything else.
  • Keep Link off on all stages. Watch the GR meters diverge. That is the plugin working as designed.
  • Try Vari-Mu first (order 4 or 5) for a rounder, fuller character - the warmth stage shaping what the faster compressors react to.
  • Low shelf on the EQ Low band after compression to recover any weight the compressors softened. Hi-Mid cut if parallel compression added edge.
  • Saturation at 15-25% last. Listen for the top end locking together.

Platform Support

  • Windows - VST3 (64-bit), Windows 10 / 11.
  • macOS - VST3 + AU (64-bit Universal Binary, Intel + Apple Silicon), macOS 11 Big Sur or later. Signed and notarized - no Gatekeeper warnings.
  • Linux - VST3 (64-bit), Ubuntu 22.04+. Tested with Reaper for Linux.

All three platforms in a single download.

System Requirements

  • 64-bit VST3-compatible host (Windows, macOS, Linux) or AU host (macOS).
  • Compatible with Reaper, Cubase, Studio One, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Bitwig Studio, Nuendo, and others; AU format for Logic Pro, GarageBand, and MainStage on macOS.
