The Make Noise MATHS is arguably one of the most iconic and versatile Eurorack modules ever created. Often described as a "synthesis computer" or the "Swiss Army knife" of modular, MATHS is a complex function generator that goes far beyond simple envelope generation. Its power lies in its ability to generate a vast range of control voltage signals, from envelopes and LFOs to complex, rhythmic modulations. It can also process and manipulate external CV and audio signals, acting as a slew limiter, filter, VCA, mixer, and even a rudimentary oscillator. MATHS is a fundamental building block that encourages a deeper understanding of synthesis principles through hands-on patching.
The module is centered around two identical, independent function generators (Channels 1 and 4) that can be voltage-controlled. These can create envelopes with logarithmic, linear, or exponential curves using their RISE and FALL controls. When cycled, they become powerful LFOs that can reach audio rates. The true genius of MATHS, however, is revealed in its central mixing and logic section. Here, the outputs of the two main channels can be combined using SUM, OR, and INVERT outputs to create incredibly complex and interrelated modulation shapes. A signal patched into the SIGNAL input can be slewed (using the function generators as slew controllers), attenuated, or amplified. By patching the module back into itself, you can create bouncing-ball envelopes, chaotic functions, and much more. It's a module that rewards experimentation and can find a use in literally any patch.
