The Make Noise modDemix is a versatile and compact analog signal processing utility that combines the functions of a ring modulator, a VCA (Voltage-Controlled Amplifier), and a signal mixer. Its clean, balanced design makes it an essential tool for a wide range of applications, from creating classic metallic, inharmonic textures via ring modulation to precisely controlling the amplitude of audio or CV signals. It's a fundamental building block that can add new dimensions to your patches in a very small amount of rack space.
The module features a primary signal input (Signal IN) and a carrier/CV input (Carrier IN). When an audio-rate signal is used as the carrier, the modDemix functions as a balanced modulator, or ring modulator, producing the sum and difference frequencies of the two input signals. When a control voltage (like an envelope) is used as the carrier, it functions as a high-quality VCA. An auxiliary input allows a third signal to be summed with the primary input before processing. The Strength knob and its associated CV input control the depth of the modulation or the amplitude of the VCA, but with a unique twist: at its 12 o'clock position, the output is silent. Turning it clockwise increases the signal in-phase, while turning it counter-clockwise increases the signal out-of-phase, allowing for interesting polarity-flipping effects. This simple yet clever design makes the modDemix a powerful and flexible tool for any modular synthesist.
