Music Mouse

Music Mouse is a modernized and expanded version of the pioneering software originally created by composer Laurie Spiegel in 1986. Developed in close collaboration with Spiegel herself, this release brings the "Intelligent Musical Instrument" to modern macOS and Windows systems, preserving the unique gestural workflow that once turned the Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari ST into expressive performance tools.

Playing the Grid

At its core, Music Mouse is a standalone application that transforms mouse or trackpad movements into harmonically coherent music. Instead of traditional note entry or complex programming, users move a polyphonic cursor across an XY grid. This grid is bordered by four keyboards representing independent voices. As the cursor moves, it triggers interlocking musical lines, with built-in harmonic logic ensuring that the results remain within a selected scale or tonality.

The software offers six harmonic modes to define the pitch space:

• Diatonic.
• Pentatonic.
• Quartal.
• Middle Eastern.
• Octatonic.
• Chromatic.

By constraining the output to these scales, the application allows for a playful, improvisational approach where the "player" focuses on the shape and movement of the music rather than individual note selection.

New Features for 2026

While the core logic remains faithful to the 1980s original, Music Mouse includes several modern refinements. The interface is now resizable and offers high-definition visual feedback, including an optional visual separator around the cursor and a "hint bar" to help users navigate the various keyboard shortcuts.

One notable addition is the inclusion of over 30 synth presets derived from Laurie Spiegel's original Yamaha DX7 and TX7 patches. For those looking to move beyond the internal sounds, the software features MIDI Out and MIDI Clock Sync, allowing it to drive external hardware or DAW-hosted plugins. This makes it an unconventional MIDI controller for creating melodies and textures that might be difficult to play on a standard keyboard.

The application also supports four rhythmic treatments—Chord, Arpeggio, Line, and Improv—which dictate how the generated notes are articulated. Users can further manipulate the performance in real-time using computer keyboard commands for transposition, velocity, and modulation.
