The Oberheim OB-X8 represents the triumphant return of a synthesizer legend, embodying the sonic soul of three iconic instruments—the OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8—into a single, unified eight-voice analog powerhouse. Conceived as a collaboration between Tom Oberheim, Dave Smith, and the engineering team at Sequential (now under the Oberheim banner), the OB-X8 is an uncompromising effort to recreate the classic "big-fat" Oberheim sound while introducing essential modern functionality. The synthesizer's signal path is 100% analog, utilizing discrete SEM-lineage VCOs and VCAs combined with meticulously matched envelope responses and filter circuitry from the original machines. This dedication to authentic analog circuitry ensures the distinct, full-bodied punch and sweepable sonic character that defined the sound of the 1980s, heard on countless seminal records from artists like Prince, Rush, and Van Halen.
I was immediately impressed with the forensic level of detail that went into the OB-X8 design and the respect for its lineage.
Trent Reznor – Nine Inch Nails/Film Composer
At the core of the OB-X8's immense sonic flexibility is its unique ability to access and blend the characteristic filters and voice architectures of its predecessors. Users can select between the discrete, 2-pole lowpass filter of the original OB-X (derived from the classic SEM design) or the 2-pole/4-pole Curtis filters (CEM3320) of the OB-Xa and OB-8. This unprecedented integration allows for the creation of sounds that were previously impossible, such as combining the warm, aggressive OB-X oscillators with the focused, punchy filter response of the OB-Xa. Furthermore, the synthesizer offers bi-timbral functionality, enabling users to layer two distinct patches for massive, complex sounds or split the 61-note premium Fatar keyboard for dedicated bass and lead sections. This level of sonic malleability, combined with the classic, tactile knob-per-function interface, makes the OB-X8 an instrument designed for immediate creative exploration and the highest level of expressive performance.
After playing the OB-X8, I'm convinced I need it. It's a true Oberheim, a great instrument, and a part of synth history.
Michael Stein – Composer "Stranger Things
Beyond its authentic vintage voice, the OB-X8 is enhanced with numerous modern features crucial for contemporary production environments. It features a high-resolution OLED display for easy patch management and deep parameter access, including the expansion of the celebrated "Page 2" functions found on the original OB-8. Key playability enhancements include a 61-key Fatar keybed with velocity sensitivity and channel aftertouch, offering superior expressive control not present in the original OB-X and OB-Xa models. Updates to the operating system, such as OS v2.0, have further introduced capabilities like MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) support, providing a new dimension of nuanced sound sculpting, and Bi-Timbral mode enhancements for complex sound design. The addition of a "Vintage" knob allows the user to dial in subtle, voice-to-voice variability, faithfully simulating the desirable analog imperfections that gave the original instruments their unique, "alive" quality. The OB-X8 is not merely a reissue but a complete realization of the Oberheim legacy.
My reaction to the OB-X8 was one of sheer joy. That sound was back and covers every filter type Oberheim ever employed.
