Honestly, there are probably equally capable chip-sound vst's/au's available by now. Windows traditionally has more of these small, free (usually Synthedit-made) instruments and effects, but I'm sure you can find what you're after for Mac as well.

Plogue Chipsounds comes to mind, have you looked into that? From what I remember from the demo, it's an impressive instrument for chiptunes, although I'm not sure anymore if it covers NES specifically.
