It is with great pride that the team at Earcandy is introducing their latest sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt 6 or newer: Quondam.

Quondam is following in the footsteps of Earcandy's bestselling sample library, the Digital 360, in that it also find its origins in old digital hardware.

This time all samples derives from an ancient and quondam piece of software; Digidesign's Turbosynth first launched way back in 1988.

Turbosynth was part of the first generation of sample editors for home computers and was available for both the Apple Macintosh and Atari ST line of computers.

Turbosynth has a vast amount of functionalities including an Oscillator Module.
This Oscillator Module is what the experts at Earcandy used to generate the samples that are the foundation of Quondam.
The Oscillator Module has a timeline on which you place additive waveforms made up of harmonics.
You can then morph between these waveforms over a specified period of time.

Once rendered on the Apple Macintosh these samples were transferred to a more modern computer using floppy disks.

The cool stuff does not end here though.

In order to make 88 new playable samples from each of the thirteen original Quondam samples these had to be loaded into some piece of soft- or hardware able to do this job perfectly. What to do?

Behold: the New England Digital Synclavier.

The original Digidesign Turbosynth samples were sampled and resynthesised by Earcandy using a top of the line Synclavier.

Following the time consuming process of resynthesising, the samples were played back, one note at a time, and recorded into a modern computer using industry leading converters resulting in the best possible quality.

The end result is stunning.

Finally it was spiced up with some filtering options and a convolution reverb.

There is also a YouTube video of all included programs.
