Substitute Modular is a semi-modular virtual analog synthesizer for Windows VST3 (64-bit), inspired by Substitute. It is a huge redesign with a host of new features, rich modulation options, step sequencers and a massive patchbay.

Features:

  • Dual oscillator section with classical waveforms.
  • Topology preserving analog-style filters.
  • Extensive modulation capabilities through four envelopes, four LFOs, two step modulators, two step sequencers and a patchbay.
  • Creative effect section with delays, chorus, reverb, waveshaper, leveler, tone control, bit reduction and saturation amp.
  • MIDI chord generator and classic arpeggiator.

This is quite a fun synth. It is an improvement over the original, adding new features, a better UI (even if it's mostly just a simple color change), and fixing issues with the original, one of those being the clunky synthedit knobs. In previous plugins by this developer, the knobs would be both the kind where you drag around it and the kind where you drag up and down. I am fine with either, but when it is both at the same time, it leads to a really weird feel overall. There is a lot of aliasing if you do not turn on fixed size buffers (at least in FL Studio, not sure about other DAWs), which isn't a problem, just a good thing to keep in mind if you choose to try this synth.

There are two things I do not like, the first being that every time a note is pressed, it makes a little beep sound, which can sound good, but not something I want for every sound. This seems to be an issue with lower sample rates. The second is that the envelope resets for all notes, rather then just the one that is being played (which would be cool as an option you could toggle).

Overall one of this developer's most polished synths, however the beep sound you get from lower sample rates is something that I hope is resolved soon.
