In the current scoring environment, the demand for massive, liturgical choirs has been replaced by a need for the intimate, the breathy, and the visceral. While traditional libraries focus on the power of a forty-piece cathedral choir, Wrongtools Unsung documents a smaller, focused group of professional vocalists. This approach draws inspiration from the minimalist choral works of contemporary masters, where the sound of the individual voice is more valuable than a blended wall of sound.
"UNSUNG is a modern celebration of un-notated vocal traditions," says a spokesperson for Wrongtools. "It's about capturing the raw, visceral power of the human instrument and engineering it for cinematic expression. The incredible artistry of Små Grå gave us a source unlike any other, allowing composers to inject their scores with a unique Scandinavian flavor and humanity."
Departing sharply from traditional choral libraries, UNSUNG is a deep exploration of the unadulterated human voice, blending classical precision with the expressive, avant-garde traditions of Nordic singing.
The performers captured for this library are leading vocalists from the Norwegian music scene, renowned for their precise intonation and ability to perform with minimal vibrato. This "straight-tone" technique is essential for modern film scoring, as it allows vocal textures to layer seamlessly with synthesizers and orchestral sections without creating pitch interference. By focusing on a small group, the library preserves the authentic "human" imperfections—the sound of an intake of breath or the subtle grain of a throat—which are critical for creating a sense of proximity and realism.
The library is built to function as a tactile performance tool. Rather than a purely phonetic word-builder, Wrongtools Choir prioritizes the "A, E, I, O, U" fundamentals alongside complex textural movements. This architecture ensures that the choir remains a supportive element in a mix, leaving space for dialogue while providing a rich, organic foundation:
Utilizing the Wrongtools Sculpting Engine, the choir can be transformed from a dry, acoustic ensemble into an evolving, ethereal texture. The inclusion of an XY-morphing pad allows composers to move between the raw vocal capture and "The Clouds"—a layer of processed vocal harmonics. This makes the library an effective tool for hybrid scoring, where the goal is to blur the line between organic and synthetic sound sources.
