A hot-reloading wavetable previewer. Designed for creative wavetable coding.

Wavetable Viewer lets you visualize and listen to wavetables stored in WAV files. It will automatically reload the wavetable as it gets modified, speeding up your process of creating wavetables.

Specifications

  • FFT-based band-limiting up to Nyquist.
  • Smooth transitions between wave frames.
  • No arbitrary limits on the number of frames.
  • Adjustable frame size up to 16 * 2048 samples.
  • Supports integer and floating point WAV formats.
  • 60 FPS GUI with a responsive layout.

Command-line Usage

Wavetable Viewer can easily be used with a GUI. But it is sometimes desired to use it via a shell. For your convenience, first ensure that the wtv executable is in a folder listed in the shell's PATH variable. Then, you can run it like so:

 wtv /path/to/wavetable.wav
 # optionally, specify the frame size:
 wtv /path/to/wavetable.wav --frame-size 1024

Wavetable Coding Tutorial

This program was made specifically to help with creating wavetables using code. So this listing would not be complete without also sharing a few tips and tricks on doing that. So, I've written a quick tutorial on wavetable coding. Have fun.

Besides being used as a developer tool, it is also useful as a simple tool for previewing wavetables without needing to load a synth or a DAW.

Credits and thanks

The wavetable oscillator is based on Matt Tytel's ADC talk "Practical Guide to Optimized High-Quality Wavetable Oscillators".

Gratitude goes to the maintainers of egui, cpal, hound, realfft, notify and the many more Rust crates which made this project possible.

Huge thanks to my friend Dimitri for recommending the egui library to me. I made Wavetable Viewer partly as a way to try it out.
