Explore the wilder side of synthesis with the Cre8audio West Pest, a semi-modular analog synthesizer that embraces the experimental "West Coast" philosophy of sound design. In contrast to traditional subtractive synthesis, West Pest focuses on additive synthesis and wave manipulation, using a complex oscillator and wavefolder to create harmonically rich and evolving timbres. This approach, pioneered by Don Buchla, is known for producing sounds that are often described as more organic, metallic, and complex. The West Pest makes this esoteric style of synthesis accessible and fun, providing a unique sonic palette for sound explorers.
At its core, the West Pest features a powerful analog oscillator with wave-shaping capabilities created by Pittsburgh Modular. Instead of a traditional filter, it employs a dynamics controller and a wavefolder, which adds harmonic complexity by folding the waveform back on itself. This allows for the creation of intricate, clangorous, and beautifully bizarre sounds that are difficult to achieve with subtractive synthesis. Like its sibling, the East Beast, the West Pest is semi-modular, with an internal signal path that allows for immediate sound generation. Its 8-point patch bay invites you to experiment with signal routing. It also includes a built-in sequencer/arpeggiator and can be mounted in a Eurorack case, making it a versatile and unconventional instrument for any electronic musician's arsenal.
