Reaktor

User since version 3.I can't remember. I am underwhelmed. There is nothing far out, nothing earth-shaking, nothing worthy of a new version in this new version. The new "boxes" are pretty-looking simplified versions of old builds. No new FX, just the standard delays and reverbs. Plus they changed the graphics interface, rendering it pretty much unusable for experienced builders.

Horrible sloppy installation, strewing program files across 4 directories and subdirectories (or more, I haven't unveiled all the horrors of where the installation put what). This is NI's very worst installation - even worse than Kontakt's. And what makes it worse is that if you TRY to do file maintanance and make things easier for you, 9 times out of 10 Reaktor will no longer read those files - because NI set up that installation exactly that way and how dare you try to do it your way.

So if your idea of electronic music creation is bland, ordinary sounds and endless, frustrating file maintanance - you're gonna lose files - Reaktor 6 is the VST for you.

I'm going to go back to 5. I DO have far-out things there.

Good quick and nasty reverb unit, plug it in program it and it's good to go. Extremely light on CPU usage. Very artificial sounding, which suits my purposes to a T. Try it on reverse reverb programming. Excellent gate implementation, which can give you that gated snare from hell I know you have been looking for. I have used this for years in Wavelab, Cubase and Audiomulch and have never experienced one problem. It is probably my main "go to" reverb. You have GOT to have this one in your arsenal. Entirely usable.

I got this as part of the NI Komplete package and so far it is the least used of the synths in the package (excluding Guitar Rig, as I do not do guitar.) This is mainly because of stability issues. The synth crashes when being tweaked in my host (Cubase Studio 4) about 2 out of 3 times. This is even while running in "Eco" mode (the lowest of 3 processor-utilization modes). Maybe my recent upgrade to Cubase 5 will help, but I am not sanguine about it. Sounds provided are ordinary, nothing to amaze and/or delight, and there are many that are just plain annoying. There are 86 waveforms provided as the basic sonic building blocks. However, after you get past the standard analog waveforms their names often mean nothing ("Strontium", "Duck Organ") and because of the stability issues when tweaking the synth, it is tough to get a conceptual handle on what each sound SOUNDS like. The interface is very nice, intuitive and stripped-down. The multiple modulation routings are a very good touch.
