I recognise the sound of the tr808 and 606, but does anyone know what else he’s using?

Particularly for the kick on Ageopolis, and the glitchy/stutter at 20:05 Then there’s the high pitched drum hit that comes in at 25:23 on blue calx

While we’re at it, how does he get that ultra deep bass sound on We Are The Music Makers? Is that just a basic sine wave that’s been heavily processed? Is he using reverb on the bass to fill things out a bit in the low end (not just in that track, but the rest of the album)?

The whole album seems so sparse and minimal, yet at the same time, complex and spacious. Whenever I try to replicate this my mixes sound empty, like crappy backing tracks.

Richard D James gear and production methods are subject to many discussions. The time period 85-92 spans a period starting when he was about 14. It is said it was produced using cheap and/or modified and/or DIY gear. And recorded onto casette tape.

Not the usual "studio" environment, gear and methods. The "objective" quality is actually quite "poor". Lo-fi, distortion and such. But...the "subjective" result is one of the highest rated electronic/ambient albums ever made.

Richard (AFX) James has been producing
music since he was 12 - I have seen him.
He worked in his bedroom in a modern
bungalow in Lanner, Cornwall.

His setup was bizarre to say the least.
Casio FZ-10M, DX-100 (missing keys'n'all),
SH-101, Quadraverb, Atari 520ST with bust
keyboard(!), odd keyboards, bits of old
electrical equipment, 8+ turntables, one
borrowed mixer(!), bits of audio gear (all
cleverly balanced on some lucozade cans,
hand-sprayed JBL's suspended from ceiling
by industrial strength chain. The list
continues...

Thanks for the info. I've since discovered he used a Roland R-8 for a lot of the drums, with the expansion cards. I was quite surprised to discover how young he was when he came up with this stuff...kind of makes me wish i started years ago instead of at the ripe age of 33....his music has done for me in my 30s what Metallica did in my early teens....

On my monitors it sounds like a 606 kick and Tom together.
