What is everyone up for this month? Have we done a "Science" month recently? Do songs about science and nature and learning and stuff?

It sounds like everyone is interpreting the "Science" theme broadly, which means it's a potentially great theme. I'll get the contest thread up with the Feb voting thread to follow later.

Question: is it allowed to use quotes from books as lyrics? For example, using a paragraph from the novel "1984". There is no way I'm going to make money from a track, but the hard fact is that 1984 is not public domain yet.

I mean, I'm not sure about the legality of it, I assume it would fall under fair use, most likely, but there's nothing de facto in the contest rules that would prohibit it!

My reading of the rules is that as long as it's attributed correctly, "Orwell wrote these words, not me", it would be legal for this competition. If you take your piece into the commercial marketplace - would be a different story

Thanks for your answers. I was thinking on finding a text on politics making bad use of science. For example, 1984's appendix on Newspeak, an engineered form of English designed with the explicit purpose of limiting thought, is a great subject to me.

On a lighter mood, there's the "don't trust any technology more complex than a fork" quote from Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a strange land".

Anyway, I'm looking for ideas on the subject of "what is the point of having immense knowledge if we're not using it for the greater good?" And let's face it, many great writers have discussed this subject in brilliant ways, way better than me.

Cool theme. I'm excited about this. :) Mars... Or what music from an alien race might sound like.

I must confess I was not aware of something called Math Rock. Wikipedia confirms this is real. Thanks Mister Natural for making my ignorant self more knowledgeable today than yesterday. I guess, this is true science.

Does Soundcloud add some dirty FX tricks through their audio engine? There are strange things going on in the low end of my entry.
