(I've been reading Harry Sword's (new?) book Monolithic Undertow: In Search of Sonic Oblivion and checking out some bands I'm unfamiliar with. When I think drone metal I immediately think of Sunn O))), but there's a lot more out there, and way more diverse influences than I would have guessed.)

i think (?) earth, get the usual credit of being the first (at least big name).
although sleep, came first, but they are "less" drone imo. more doom a la cathedral and such. but that is probably the beginning of "drone metal" as a genre, coming out of death.
death and obituary, being the bridge between death and doom.

teeth of lions rule the divine are pretty good, a supergroup of drone :hihi:

this is all imo, not like ive researched, just my memory of the early days of doom/drone metal :)

may grab a copy of the book though, sounds interesting cheers :tu:
