jo, i'm creating a drum mixer mux (using separate outs of a vst drum machine) and the 'mixer strip' module has a 'mute' but not 'solo' button.
is it possible to add a 'solo' button to the mixer strip module to make it easier to audition individual drum sounds?

Why not use racks?
Racks do have that solo feature, and they also allow inserting effects.

rack are much bigger. would work, but the mux ends up taking lot of screen space.

I understand your point.
I've taken a note about this but can't promise anything at this point.
To be honnest i'm trying to buffer new feature requests like this one or others (eg this one ) as much as possible as long as M9 has not yet been released and the VST 3 question has not yet been solved.
The good news is that the core M9 development is close to its end and nearing its beta test stage.

Or maybe one could use a collapsed rack in the front panel and lock it so that it cannot be expanded unless the edit button is pressed - just an idea which crossed my mind.
