That Rekkard guy posted some video game samples lately in the sampler forum, they're pretty intense.

You could also get pretty close by taking any decent relatively clean sounding VA, set it to single oscillator, square/pulse wave (depending on what you're looking for), no filtering (you can EQ ofcourse but no filter modulation). That'll basicly get you a prototypical melodic sound.

As it is, most "8-bit" systems basicly generate pulse waves. The amplitude and frequency can usually be modulated pretty freely, but the essential is part is the lack of any filtering (or other soundshaping) on the pulses. When simulating, properly antialiasing oscillators are important, if you're after decent quality simulation, since many original chips would be able to vary the frequency by actually varying the output clock (essentially samplerate) which by passes aliasing problems.

Now, some chips would be able to use more complicated wavetables than simple pulses, but for the general character, pulses should be enough. Some chips might be able to do PWM modulation, so that doesn't necessarily ruin the impression.

Ofcourse, then to make it sound like chip music, you have to use it like in chip music, and since both the raw sound and the number of channels would be seriously limited, this usually means varying the sound with crazyly fast arpeggios.

Unfortunately, most VAs can't give you the tuned noise that's fundamental to "drums" in 8-bit music.. if I'm not mistaken those typically work essentially as tuned sample&hold of random numbers.. but finding a plugin that can do those shouldn't be that hard.. unfortunately can't remember any good one right now.. but you could try any SID emulations or something like that..

LOL, I have almost everything you guys should me already, before you showed me. Like all of the JackDark stuff. Nanox1&2 & at least 1/2 of the pluggotic stuff. I have a lot more too, just not "8-bit stuff. I did see a few things new that I liked though.

If you have all that already, I would say it's time to make music then.

I have been. I actually took a short break from music to fockus on school for a bit. Now I'm getting back into music again. I have a lot of songs, but most are unfinished.
