and I got to wondering...
how do you set up your effects in Orion?
What do you put in the sends and inserts on the mixer?
Do you use the inserts on the master?
Do you use the master eq's before streaming?
I'll get the ball rolling...
and this isn't intended to be a "you're way's wrong, my way's right" thread and there's no hidden agenda at work here.
Mixer
Sends - I put things like chorus, delays and other effects that I may want to use on more than one instrument and that I might want to control the amount of that effect differently per instrument.
Inserts - I'll put something like a dub delay or whatever in the top and possibly (especially for drums) a compressor in the bottom one.
EQ's - I very rarely use the soft saturation option but I like the post fx option. I tend to tweak each instrument to a different eq value so everything sits in it's own space.
Volume - I try to keep the signal just so as it's in the orange on the loudest instrument, then adjust the other levels around that. Some instruments don't have an onboard volume so the volume needs to be adjusted in Orion itself.
This can mean that some instruments are getting low input signals but if I turn them up, they're out of balance with the other stuff.
Buses - sometimes use them, sometimes don't. Useful if you're doing an effect heavy tune and run out of inserts and sends.
Master
I keep an eye on the insert volume levels in here and adjust here and on the mixer as necessary. I never let it go above orange.
I don't tend to use the eq's in these bits.
In the buses, I put - well, whatever, really.
Sometimes I'll add more compressors, or just pile effects on top of each other to see what happens.
Again, I don't tend to use the eq's here and keep the volume of each bus within the orange.
I often end up in a battle with the mixer volumes over precedence - same with the insert volumes here, actually.
In the master itself, I've been doing this:
Top slot - Vintage Warmer (used to put endorphin or Blockfish here before I had VW)
Second slot - if needs be, a little tiny tiny touch of reverb.
Third slot, or second slot if no verb - either a compressor or a limiter.
The eq's I sometimes play with so the mix really comes to life.
I generally set it to 'analog' before I stream as well.
Then I stream at 24 bit, all samplers to highest quality, all files to one, import to audio editor and boost it a little more there.
*Phew.*
I'm really curious to know how other people set theirs up.
