I want to do the new york mixing style on my bass and drum and I need a compressor thats auto make up gain. What i'm going to do is have my bass and drums signal playing without compression and then have a send effect of a compressor that is going to be played at the same time over the original drums, sounds really good. but i need an auto make up gain thing to make it sound pretty decent.
I'm using cubase then reason for drums but I dont like using there auto make-up comp it sucks. Also im mixing all in cubase so it will be eaiser
Another question I have is, how do you go about tuning drums in cubase?

For the New York Style(e) Parallel Bus Compression trick, you don't really NEED to have Auto-Makeup Gain. But you do NEED to be certain that there is not delay/latency between the dry drums and the compressed drums.

Yes, that's what I would say too.For the New York Style(e) Parallel Bus Compression trick, you don't really NEED to have Auto-Makeup Gain. But you do NEED to be certain that there is not delay/latency between the dry drums and the compressed drums.
But I would think that most VST compressors have some kind of makeup gain control. In fact, for what you want to do you should also have a look at those compressors that have wet/dry controls built in directly. I believe there is a a bunch of those arround. That would be an easy way to achieve the parallel compression you refer to.

when did this become "the new york style"? wtf?
is someone claiming to have "invented" it in EQ or Tape Op?
how 'bout the thing where you eq the drums, what style is that? sorry, just being a smart ass for no reason.

New York style drums are heavily compressed. You can tell from most rap albums, if u want a good example of this take a listen to a lil john cd LOL. Also in my book called "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" by Bobby Owsinski he defines LA style, New York style, Britsh style, and a lot more... mixing styles are just how different locations have evolved.bongo_x wrote:when did this become "the new york style"? wtf?

Billy,
This technique has been known as the New York City Drum Bus Technique for decades. In a manner that is similar to "The British Nuke" or "British All Buttons In" tecnique with the 1176 compressor.

The term you wanna use for this is "parallel compression".Elfs1der wrote:New York style drums are heavily compressed. Certain compressors have a knob, certain compressors do it under the covers, some compressors don't do it at all. Some compressors do a straight across the board make-up gain, other compressors seem to have a touch of maximizer output gain sound & feel that pushes the gain up based on program content...that's just from a user point of view.Elfs1der wrote:Where is the auto make-up gain feature in this VST?
