i found myself wondering about this a little while ago. the simple workaround (staying within T) is to do the following:

plonk the sample clip on a track.
enable looping for the clip.
drag it out so that it's a nice length
render that track
copy the resultant render and paste it into the sampler.

[in case you have problems with copy/paste of clips into the sampler, remember to use the CLIPBOARD button to the left of the properties panel when the sampler is selected, when you choose paste from here it will add it to the sampler sample list]

this also means that it's dead simple to 'make' these 'single sample' loops from any old sample.. just enable looping and drag the loop handles so they're quite tight together til you get a nice timbre. also, when you've got something that is cycling enough to get a 'tone', CTRL-drag on the loop handle will slip the position of the wave in the loop, so you can be looping a different portion of the wave. this lets you drastically change the timbre of the generated tone, depending on the actual content of the clip.

works for me!

Computationally that isn't all that efficient, unfortuantely.

Firstly the T sampler does not do the best job of resampling. So your waveform will quickly develop alias artifacts if you don't use a separate osc sample for each key (which would be brutally heavy on RAM usage). Additionally, because the filter section of your sampler would be entirely divorced from the osciallator engine, there would be no way to optimise any new resamping code to share duties with the filter.

You'd also need a standalone env generator, which would need to generate modified note off events for the sampler, otherwise your release curve would inaudible.

oh, whoops i didn't see the low cpu part. what i do isn't for apeing synths by using their cycles and whatnot (esp. having no envelopes etc..), but just for making a quick playable thing from any old bits and bobs that are lying around on my edit.

i think it's jolly good fun!
