not sure if this is a dumb question or not (ok i'm sure..its dumb!)
how does one do the following (if possible?)
lets say you have drums on track 1, bass on track 2, and a clever guitar riff on track 3.....
how do you copy a section (say measures 17-24) of all three tracks to paste later in the composition. is it a track by track operation? is there any way to group or link a set of tracks so that the operation affects all at the same time.

use the / key to split your clips at the start and end of the section to copy ...
... alt+click-drag to lasso / select multiple clips (ie - the ones youve just created by splitting) ...
... either copy / paste using the clipboard menu or (easier) ctrl+click-drag the selected clips to copy them to your new position ...
