Why can't you tell your boss something like "well Mackie says T2 will be out in March, meanwhile we can get T1 for the students and then upgrade"
Because professional accounting doesn't work that way. They would still have to pay for the upgrade, and if that money isn't spent right now, they lose it. They can't allocate it for upgrade copies without spending it.

Besides which, what if Mackie faces unforseen difficulties and it's not out in March? Classes start and students don't have proper equipment. Headquest has already said that T1 is insufficient for their needs. Meanwhile, even the big companies like Microsoft have repeatedly pushed back release dates on major products.
Dimwit wrote:How can you boss not think the product exists? Have you shown him the website? Maybe you can pick up the EQ magazine or the Computer Music magazine and show him.
Ever heard the term "vaporware?" Advertising and a website aren't proof of anything. Companies will promise you the moon if they think it'll boost sales. I'm not saying I don't trust Jules to deliver -- I do. But I'm already a satisfied customer and other folks don't have the customer experience that we have. Trust almost always has to be earned.

Besides which, you can't evaluate a piece of software until you get it in your hands, and that surely needs to be done in headquest's case. He's said before that T1 isn't cutting it for his department, and that T2 is expected to be more suited to their needs, but until it arrives they won't know for sure.
Dimwit wrote:You keep acting like Mackie screwed you over or something. Last time I checked it is still March so we can't accuse Mackie of lying to us.
No, but we can accuse Mackie of making things damned inconvenient. More importantly, we can accuse them of botching their marketing big time. Any good marketer knows that word of mouth is the best advertising. But it's hard to hype a currently unavailable product. To do it, you need concrete information, which we don't have:

Boss: "We need to spend our budget money by March 19th or we lose it."
Employee: "Tracktion 2 is due out in early March. The interface is the easiest to use on the market, and it's being distributed by Mackie, who has an excellent reputation in the market for quality products."
Boss: "Great! I'm sold. But when exactly is early March?"
Employee: "Uh... they won't say."
Boss: "So we can't be sure if it'll be out in time to evaluate and deploy?"
Employee: "Well, yeah."
Boss: "Go buy the new Cubase, then."

Dimwit wrote:You know, Mackie didn't promise us a rosegarden.
Nothing is owed to us. T2 could have very well not ever been created.
Mackie didn't promise us anything. That's sort of the problem. It's understandable that they want to play their hand close to the vest, but their lack of forthcoming information is forcing people like headquest and myself to make time-sensitive purchasing decisions for which T2 is not yet an option. In headquest's case, it will cost Mackie a few licenses and well-placed exposure to possible future buyers. Maybe not an outstanding loss, but a loss nonetheless.

but a loss that is attributable ENTIRELY to unfortunate circumstances ... had we been having this discussion in june or october this wouldnt have been an issue ... the whole thing just coincidentally happens to be occurring at a bad time for headquest particularly (and one that as a head of department in UK education i entirely understand - i havent been allowed to spend anything since the end of january) ...

... no consolation ... but itll be ready when its ready

Umm the pics now plz??

reading this far we need it :D

It's on the very first page of the new EQ magazine. I don't have a scanner or digital camera, so I can't get a pic up. The only other option is to go to Kinkos and get it put on disc. But I don't know where there is a Kinkos here in downtown Nashville.

Does ANYONE else have this yet? Or maybe someone will stop by the bookstore and get a copy to scan in. Sorry I can't help more. I will see if there is any way of doing this though. :(

I disagree. This isn't just an unfortunate coincidence. If T2 weren't going to be available until after headquest's deadline, then that would be the case, yes. But the problem isn't the timing, it's the lack of information. What if it comes out next week? Mackie will have missed a good opportunity by not providing information.

Now, I realize that they may not be capable of providing that information yet. If I understand correctly, Jules is pretty much a one-man development team, and it's hard to make estimates on how long it'll take to to complete the product and get it ready for sale. In all likelihood, Mackie doesn't want to make a promise they can't keep.

But that doesn't change the fact that it's cost them a few sales. The lack of information is a legitimate complaint. Maybe it's not possible for them to address that complaint to our satisfaction, but that's still at least a minor failing on their part. Them's the breaks.

dont get me wrong ... im not saying theyve dealt with it in the best possible way (i too would personally like more solid details on dates and pricing) ... i was just pointing out that headquest for one wouldnt have been in such an awkward position had the potential launch not coincided with the financial year end ...

I don't know much about publishing, and even less about Mackie's sales/advertising departments,
Mackie is well known liar (in marketing/advertising).
They always anounce products (or their expected advantages) for months in advance (hard disc recorders among most obvious examples) to raise temperature and than they are unable to fulfill it.
I am sure that T2 will be nice looking, well advertised product with lot of bugs or limited functions (unfortunately) that will be fixed during years to come.

Based on what? Jules is in charge of the code, not Mackie. I don't think you assessment is deserved.

... well advertised - possibly but i know nothing about mackies advertising policies

... but ...

... lots of bugs and limited functionality ??? maybe you should wait until you can actually try the product before making such emphatic claims ...
