I've never tried this one out, I dont know how.

I know its used for deessing, but more importantly one would put a bassdrum through it to control a whole mix!

Sounds nice! How would I apply sidechain in software VST?

I use Logic 5.5.1 though the general rule will apply to most hosts.

No, it will only apply to "Cubase sucks" hosts

:hihi:

You can do sidechaing in SX-3 using a surround group channel. You can do that now. VST3 spec that should be out shortly is supposed to support sidechaing directly within the vst structure. When that happens each vst will have to be re-written to support side-chaining directly, instead of using the aformentioned group channel method.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

the logic compressor can do sidechain compressing,
just look at the plugin window.
If you click on sidechain, you can select a source....

And we will have to shell $$$ out for updates, not least for SX4 which will cost yet another €150 for one new feature and 23478 new bugs :(

At least SX3 hasn't been cracked to my knowledge, so maybe I won't have to get a new dongle when I upgrade

I belong to the vst development newsgroup. It's been discussed for years and it seems as though they are finally gonna do it. I can't say it's gonna be there for sure, but I give it a 95% chance. The big thing to remember is that it will only "support" sidechain routing. It will require every developer to write the feature into each plug.

Actually there is a ton of super sweet stuff in vst3. Enhanced GUI stuff for example. I can't wait.

I also want to say again that real sidechaining is very possible in SX-3 using the surround channel and sending the duck portion of the signal to the rear channels and the audio to the front channels. It's not hard to do.

Nope, don't need to do any of this. Like I said above, you can sidechain using surround channels. Give it a try. The above whinney stuff is irrelivent. No hosts have all features. They never will. You will always either pay or not for the next version or maybe go with a different host or possibly take up gardening. It's up to you.

i'm on the mailing list, but this is the first i've heard of it. has Steinberg released a press paper or something? are there any specifics yet? do they have a beta SDK? i would love to see how this is going to work.

These are band news. Hope they won't go this route as they already have everything needed for side-chaining. The only thing that's missing is a modern routing capabilities within Cubase.

Do tell SJ - will the SX3 spec change the audio format passed from plug to plug from the current 32 bit float? Does Aleksey's suggestion of flexible routing of audio signals look like getting up at some point?

Is there anywhere we can read up on this stuff directly?

wtf. The VST3 spec does not need to add support for sidechaining. There's already support for that in the VST spec. It's just that some hosts are a bit.... stiff when it comes to audio handling. If a plugin supports two stereo ins, the host ought to let you route two stereo ins to it.
