[edited out some whining...]

anyway, i'll give it another try. this time i'll phrase my question in a more general manner:
when you, fellow tracktioneer, choose to render a track which contains 24 bit audio, which resolution will the resulting file get; 16 or 24?

i'm speaking of the "render track" option, not "export audio".

Depends on what I intend to do with the resulting file. If it's for CD then I will dither it down to 16 bit, if for MP3 I will create 16 bit but not usually worry about dither. If I intend to do further processing later, then 24 bit.

Render (slightly bizarely IMO) uses the soundcard resolution to determine the bit-depth of the rendered file: if you have a 24-bit card you will create 24-bit files, but if you have a 16-bit card you will only get 16-bit files: in this case I would recommend using the export feature instead, and re-importing the result, as you can then freely choose the resolution.

Post

Really? I always thought render was done in your chosen resolution. Hence, if in your soundcard you've set it to 16-bit, it would render in 16-bit even though the card is capable of 24-bit...?

export should work, because then i can choose resolution (if memory doesn't fail me, i'm not at home right now). but my soundcard IS 24 bit; haven't found out how to set it to any other resolution.

Aha! Oops, you're right! I can't set mine either. Must've all been a dream...

A strange, strange dream...

so will t2 handle this differently? and semi-related when i render a rewire track from reason it sounds terrible and i'm not sure why.

Post

Tracktion is reputed to be one of the best (and for many, is THE best) reWire hosts available. Surely any sound quality issues are unrelated to Tracktion directly?

yeah, i know. so i'm puzzled! i am using tracktion and reason and nothing else. i'm not sure where the degradation is coming in... will have explore this more...

I think T2 will be the same..

Try exporting the Reason tracks, with "render at 1x play speed" checked..

i'll try when i get home. thx.
