What did I ever do to you?
OMIGOD I'm so sorry. What have I done?!

*Give donke a hug*

shamann - Ok, well, I'd like to try to live in your ideal world for a couple years and see if I like it. I dunno, maybe I might. Who knows?

Not so much an ideal world, just a way accepting that the idea of the universal is a social, purely manufactured concept. I can look down at the nosepicker (sorry donks), but it doesn't mean I'm right. Also, it serves no purpose really but to boost my sense of selfworth.

What you like is all well and fine, but it doesn't mean anyone else likes it. You get together with a few likeminded folk and create a code of standards, still means you've excluded everyone else.

Because, who the hell are we to judge any standard of excellence?
Dude. Who do you think all awards, "Top 10" lists, "Best of the year" of anything, Olympics, competitions, sports, American Idol, Who Wants to be a Millionaire reality TV crap is made for? People like that are basically running the world because of their consumer lifestyle. They run the world and they vote in our elected officials--well take out the welfare bit, 'cause no one really lives off welfare if they can help it. I mean if it was so great wouldn't we all be doing that?

Anyway, it's a stupid argument because we're not talking about things that can be quantitatively determined. You can't really place a universal value judgement on a piece of music or art. You can quantitatively judge scholastic achievement--a math problem is either wrong or it's right, a sentence is either gramatically correct or it isn't--but saying flat out that any musical style is crap or it's not is impossible to back up with anything but personal or cultural opinion.

Someone was saying, for example, that all prog rock is wankery and twiddly and blah, blah, blah. That's mostly an personal opinion, but it is certainly one at least partly derived from a cultural context. That person admits to being young. They didn't live through the cultural wasteland of the disco era. They didn't have to put up with the pop music dominating the air waves at that time--rag on prog rock, will ya, go listen to 12 hours of The Carpenters and tell me if you wouldn't want to hear some ELP wankery instead! Oh, and if you like The Carpenters . . . that's valid too (even though I'm glad I'm not you!).

Anyway, anyone growing up from the 80's on is used to music that is primarily based on beat and chant. Prog rock was all about performance technique. It was musicianship, not programming ability that was prized. Keith Emerson twiddled around with sounds, for sure, but he was a damn sight better technical player than 99% of the synth users today. I used to love his work. Hate it now, because I learned to value other types of music more. But that doesn't make his work valueless. It gave me countless hours of pleasure at the time. Prog rock is dated now because it doesn't conform to currently accepted musical templates. That doesn't make it bad, it just means young people will be more challenged to try and learn to appreciate it.

Come to think of it, I dislike most Mozart. Sue me.

My apologies if you felt coerced. I have frequently been told that I come off as a pompous ass on a message board. I try to avoid this, but as you see, it does not always work.
