I use Blockfish and Endorphin religiously. No wonder he works for Magix. ;D
Both of those VSTs are 100% essential in my book. I still can't believe they're free!

Blockfish is wonderful and full of character. It's the perfect complement to the clarity of the Kjaerhus Classic compressor and limitter. The other DfP free plugs... I'm still learning!

I love Blockfish. I think the main reason is that it eliminates a lot of the knobs found on most compressors and so destroys the learning curve, but still sounds good. Intead of threshold and ratio, it's just got "compression". Instead of attack and release, it's just got "speed". And of course all the saturation and back-panel knobs are great for making things that don't quite sit cut through more. It is defininetly the only compressor I use as the bundled FL compressor is just too advanced for my puny brain.

It must be something funny in my setup....I used to use Blockfish alot on my old setup - which was an Athlon 1.1GHz on Win98SE and Cubase VST5.1, Aardvark soundcard.
As soon as I went over to the new setup (AMD 2.5, WinXP and SX 2.2.033 and same soundcard ....Blockfish crashes my system every time. It's weird - all of Sascha's other plugins work fine still - I still regularly use Endorphin and Dominion no problems (apart from the sticky sliders in Dominion). I even tried Old Host Behaviour with no change. Blockfish won't even load - it just crashes the whole shebang!
Anyone else had this problem? I've not heard of it before - I just assumed it was either some arcane setting in SX or a WinXP thing, but others seem to use it in both those with no problems. I tried and tried, and it's always Blockfish that does it, no matter what channels I try to put it in, and any chain of FX - even does it if it's the only FX in the whole project...
I eventually deleted it begrudgingly from my folder. Simply can't use it nowadays. Another reason I miss VST5.1

I'd be very interested to know how many people here use/own some of the more acclaimed commercial native compressors (e.g. sonalksis, GCO, crunchessor) & whether/how often they still use blockfish/endorphin & also how they rate would rate them in a comparison.
I seem to remember reading a thread a long time ago on kvr where some guys who really came across as knowing what they were talking about rated the digital fish phones compressors very highly indeed in head to heads.
I'm asking as i'm starting to evaluate my plug in folder & i'm wondering what i really actually 'need' to buy & any input anyone has would be very welcome

It's easy enough to download the demo's of the commercial stuff to compare for yourself. Personally, I look for clean, undamaged compression. If I want saturation, I look for seperate plugins. I got excited about Blockfish a couple of years ago, but hardly ever use it now. If you get into using compressors, you will find that the attack and release controls are essential. Imagine a synth without ADSR - only S. That wouldn't be much use, and personally I find compressors that lack A & R to be relatively useless. For this reason I really like Ultrafunk Sonitus, and Kjaerhus Golden compressors. The Anwida compressor is also very good if you want a simple clean compressor.

yeah - i was looking at the ultrafunk bundle - at £199 you seem to get a lot of bang for your buck.
Just so much to bloody choose from, it's a little bewildering.
also looking at the (now discontinued) TC Native power pack - been looking after my little bro's mac & stuff while he's been away & he uses the TC stuff - the comp's nice (as is the reverb with a short tail).
I like the 'character' of the fishphones stuff, though i can totally see your point about the non-standard controls.
