A little confused about racks

I'm having trouble really understanding racks. Are there any good existing tutorials. I saw there was one at abde.org but the page was missing. And the tracktionfaction output tutorial did not clarify it for me. I must be making an assumption somewhere that's hanging me up. I see the midi outputs in my Battery plugin, but it seems like they are actually audio outputs or something. Any help pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated...

The outputs are color-coded; green outputs are audio, yellow outputs are midi. You can route an output to an input by clicking on the output and dragging your cursor over the desired input and then releasing. Your question is a little fuzzy, so if I haven't quite answered it try adding a few more specifics.

thanks MaxC! that was the missing link for me! I can't believe I didn't see that to begin with. I could've sworn the green cables were labeled midi out...

Best way to get started is to insert a filter on a track as usual, then right-click -> "wrap this filter in a new rack"
This will sort all the cabling out for you..

the wrap feature works real well.. after that all you need to make sure about is that the rack output is recieved only on one track (unless ure using multi out) else ull have an amplified sound.

To use Battery with multiple outputs, you must first set the number of outputs in Battery (Options -> Outputs) and choose how many mono/stereo outs you want and restart tracktion.
Now create a new rack filter and drag Battery into it. You now see that there are multiple outs from Battery. In Battery, you can choose the output for every cell by choosing "output" in the top-right menu called "Info". Then click and drag at the top of the cells to change output.
Now go back to the rack and create as many rack-outputs as you like and connect the Battery outputs to these rack-outputs. Then connect the rack's midi-input to Battery's midi-input.
Create an instance of the rack on each track that you want to use for your drums. For each track you have to set what rack-output to use as track-input, by clicking the rack-filter on each track and choose that rack-output in the menu "Left/Right output comes from".
Was it possible to understand that explanation?

understand that if you have a low tom and a hi tom sequenced on two different tracks, yet they share the same battery output, you till have the return from battery coming to both the tracks, hence amplifying the sound by two. the way around is to disable the rack output on one of the two tracks.
i just figured this out.. so am a bit wanting to share it...
huge problem with reverbs... hehe..

Well i have a reverb in the rack, say the DX reverb.
I have the rack filter on 4 tracks.. mix the dry and wet levels of one of the tracks to taste... the return from the DX reverb will come to all 4 tracks with the corresponding rack filter inserted... so if one track I have this little wet signal being mixed to the rack, and this huge reverb in return...
the way i do it now is by mixing all the four rack filter totally dry... reducing the rack output in the same plugin to zero.. controlling the ammount of signal going to the reverb using the Rack input slider... Do this with all four tracks..
making a new track a.k.a. reverb return... assigning it a rack filter. trimming the rack input slider to infinity, keeping the rack output slider at unity....
making sence ???

Sounds about right to me, although if there is nothing on the return track it doesn't matter what that rack filter's input slider is set to..sidhu wrote:the way i do it now is by mixing all the four rack filter totally dry... reducing the rack output in the same plugin to zero.. controlling the ammount of signal going to the reverb using the Rack input slider...
