I've tried to set up various programs (Samplitude, Sonar, Wavepad etc.)to act as external editors for Tracktion. Each of them opens up and displays the wav form, no problem, but I can't hear anything in any of them when I press Play. In Sonar there's a setup option to "share audio drivers with other programs". Is there something similar in Tracktion that I'm missing?
I'm running a Terratec Phase 22 soundcard, (which is a bad-tempered bugger at the best of times and may, in fact, be the problem), AMD XP2000+, 1Gb RAM.

Hmmmm...the thot plickens. I've discovered that when I open up an external editor with 24 bit wav files this is when I get no sound or some kind of incomprehensible error message about codecs. If I convert the file to 16 bit format everything works fine and I can hear the file play back in the editor. Thing is, all of the editors I've tried are perfectly capable of playing back 24 bit files. So I'm left with a problem that's more mystifying than the one I started with. So how can I send my 24 bit files out for editing? Is it a problem with Tracktion or something else? Who will win the UEFA Cup? What does it all mean...?

Works fine for me (with Acoustica).
Are you using ASIO drivers for the editor? If so try switching to DX instead, as Tracktion will be hogging the ASIO drivers as long as it is running..

It works fine for me with Acoustica or Audition, too. Audacity works, but has problems saving and updating the file 'live' (it won't over-write an open file, but that's Audacity's limitation, not Tracktion's).
One thing to do for SURE is to use different drivers. Even if it says that you can share or 'release' drivers and all that stuff, don't bother. An audio editor isn't for live usage anyway, so use the WDM driver instead of the ASIO.
Also, Samplitude and Sonar aren't really meant for audio editing duties. I can see why you'd give it a try, but I also dont' find myself surprised that they don't behave as expected.
Both Acoustica and Audition have 30 day fully-functional trials, so I'd give them both a try. I ended up with Acoustica because of the price, but Audition for 30 days is a pretty sweet deal.

Thanks for all of that, gents. I'll try different drivers - that makes sense to me. And I agree about Acoustica - for the price it's a great little program. Have you tried Wavepad? It's a freebie, recommended by CM magazine. Similar to very early versions of Cool Edit, and good enough for quick 'n' dirty editing such as topping and tailing, taking coughs, splutters and ums out of radio interviews etc.

i found wavepad (tried it after CM mentioned) really sluggish on my system ... for the quick-n-dirty stuff i use EZ-editor (not free but nice and fast to load for simple editing tasks) ...

Acoustica users: I'm thinking of getting this to replace Audacity, but from the demo I don't see how to make Acoustica use a non-ASIO driver (sound card is Terratec DMX 6Fire lite on Win XP Home with DirectX 9) so that I can preview stuff in Acoustica if I launch it from within Tracktion
In the playback device dropdown there is only a choice for "DMX 6fire wave", i.e., no way to select among ASIO, DX, WDM or whatever

If you are using ASIO drivers you have to have this drivers to be multiclient for use with more than one application. Check specs or use WDM instead.

I use Acoustica. I don't know what the drivers are that it's using (it just says AP Multi), but I can use Tracktion and Acoustica at the same time no problem.

thanks guys -- I think it might just a problem with this particular sound card and its drivers -- it claims to be multiclient, but maybe that's only specifically for ASIO + GSIF
