Anybody using it, and what do you think?

Post

not as good as 98lite where you could load the os with a much more efficient shell.
it uninstalls alot of stuff, but with sysoc.inf you can do much of the same stuff.
not gunna make your puter any faster, using gpedit and limiting services will.

Post

What is gpedit? And "limiting services" means?

Sorry, I'm a noob! :scared:
:help:

Post

then for now just look at them, cause lots can go wrong..
if you have xp pro, choose run> gpedit.msc
control panel> administration> services
gpedit can shut off tons of stuff that suck resources
too many services running can suck the life blood out of your puter

take a look at nlite, that tool is much better. it shrunks the xp before the install and can integrate sp1 & sp2 and hotfixes and you can tweak a lot. i made an installcd were i have to do nothing during the installation process and the installed version is halfe the size than xp normaly.

cool, lots of things I can screw up....like a bull in a china shop....

Thanks for the nlite tip, aldi. With T2 on the not so distant event horizon, it's time to retire 98Lite on my music box. I tried XPlite and was not that impressed either. But I look forward to screwing things up, although Windows on its own does a pretty good job of that!

I have the XPlite and use it on my DAW boot.

Together with disabling a ton of services it works great (I have around 55 mb ram used for system with graphics and audio drivers)

for services - check the black viper page.

I wouldnt recommend XPlite or any util than removes bits of Windows XP. I used to use it but I found problems installing new software or hardware later on and random crashes months later. Yes it slims XP down and if your pc is slow it can help but it can also make it unreliable.

Post

True.

But I always remove MSN Messenger, Windows Tour and Movie Maker right after Xp installation. No harm in that.

And some other things too.

I've no internet on my daw, so I remove everything that has to do with it there, Outlook...I leave internet explorer though, many programs need it.

wanna tweak, go here... http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

good for killing silly services and getting some resources back.

I hate IE. Will firefox replace it with no (or minimal) probs?

Post

Ditto ModulR's advice to visit blackviper.com. Great place to get an education on services and solid straightforward advice on disabling the useless ones.

@FoxV: Firefox will replace IE with no problems, except for dealing with proprietary shit like Windows Update (and of course IE-only web shites). I work for a MS-centric software company, and our IT people have blessed the use of FF 1.0, which many of us use. It's actually safer than IE because it doesn't have the same security vulnerabilities.

I use XPlite on my laptop (XP SP1), and have it trimmed down to the absolute bare essentials for audio and internet. While it's true you do have to know what you're doing, I haven't had any problems. I'm running Mozilla 1.7.6 instead of IE/OE, and Nod32 AV, behind a Linksys BEFSR41 NAT router/firewall. Latency is 2.9ms to my Echo Indigo (PC Card), and Tracktion is rock solid. But YMMV, especially with USB audio.

Really my only complaint with XPlite is that it uses system restore, and I'd just as soon disable that to save the disk space.
