As an update, I have finished the "Bassics", "MM Slapping", and "Tapping" soundfonts. I'm still unsure whether I should sell it (downloadable) or have it for free. I've considered donations, but I'm not sure setting up that would be worth the effort. Anyways, if I end up selling it, I definitely will make usable "light versions" of all the soundfonts (rather than crippling them like other sound developers do). What do you think?
My thoughts

You either sell it – or don’t sell it – no real point making a crippled or light version.

If you sell it – how? How much? Where do you distribute the font from? How are you going to market it?

If donations, same again where do you distribute from?

I would make a firm choice – between sell or give away

If sell ask how much people would be willing to pay – then go on from there

If not to sell – well you already know the outcome, people download, some give feedback – the percentage is small as to who gives feedback after downloading – the sales will be even smaller imo. – so you would need to market to a wider audience

Best regards,

Peter

This is true. I won't really know for sure until I finish it, but I'm planning on selling it for about $15-20. Really inexpensive compared to some of the samples out there, but I like it that way. I mean, what I'm working on doesn't really compare with the Scarbee slap bass. The Sonic Implants basses are pretty decent, too. If I sell it I would have it downloadable, using Paypal (or some other similar service, not sure about Paypal).

But you're right about the marketing thing. It seems like if I wanted more people interested in my soundfonts (and I do) I'd have to put a lot of effort into advertising to people outside of KVR. And perhaps people outside of the soundfont world, too. There's no real point in selling it if very few people buy it.

Anyways, it looks like this soundfont kit is going to end up being around 120 megs total.

Well geoff give me a PM if you need the webspace - secure download area and a page for your pay pal button - I am sure I can work something out based on if you sell anything or not.

Yes you would need to go head first into it - good web page - and a clean marketing approach (ie put readmes in everything pointing back to your web page especially on the free fonts - have your sig image pointing back to your page - make news annoucements on every sample site you can find (great lists in this forum to start with for example)

I think $20 is super cheap and not going to break anyones bank - Just the download size might get in the way of dial uppers - so you would need a break down option of the kit too, full bank - or indervidual patches)

Peter

Any ideas of good (maybe free) bass amp simulator? And thanks to geoffkhan for this one, im sure it will be splendid.

In fact geoff, based on your other work – I think maybe $20 is too cheap, if you broke the font up into individual banks you would be able to sell those independently and the whole sound font at a much greater price (but cheaper than buying the banks separately) you solve two issues - one dial uppers, and second - Perceived value.

Peter

FWIW, I was thinking something like 20-30 USD/EUR, just on basis of the audio demo. If my 512Mbs of memory is good for this font on SFZ, consider 1 pce sold. I've been looking for a good, simple sample-based bass instrument for a long time and I really liked that Miller style demo...

I don't want to ruin the free experience for others, but there's clearly a lot of work and dedication behind this sf and I feel like rewarding that, and there's no way I'll ever be able to do a sound like this myself.

These demos are sounding really sweet, Geoff!

20 $ for this gem? Consider me among the first buyers!
Wish I had such sounds for this price.

Yeah, that's a good idea to break the soundfont up. Right now, they actually are separate files, so I'll just keep them that way.

I thought it'd be nice to write up instructional readme files explaining exactly how the bass is played and tricks on sequencing, because not everyone will know what exactly the "Marcus Miller" way of slapping versus the "Victor Wooten" way.

I'm also thinking it'd be nice to have "simple" versions of the instrument included, too. No extra filesize, because they'd use the same samples, I'd just make it a little more General Midi-like.

Whatever you do, do it fast ;)

I'm really looking forward to this one.

I second that, $20-30 is fine with me! But if you split up the sf2 and sell it piecemeal for $20 for each articulation, I likely won't be interested.

I'm willing to pay also, as long as the price doesn't get too steep. I've had alot of expenditures lately, so it's a bit tight right now. Plus, missing work from being sick, it sucks. But I'm definately interested!
