Can anyone tell me please where Final mix looks for its Factory and user presets? They were available in the GUI and now they have dissapeared. :?

Did you do a system restore or something to your computer?

I had this problem. My very primitive approach was to take both final mix and the presets out of my plugins folder, start Tracktion, Exit, put final mix et.all back in the plugins folder and restart Tracktion.

Sounds stupid, but it worked.

Don't know why though.

Thanks - Yes, I did a system restore so it's worth a try. :)

It's a known (and annoying) issue that's allegedly addressed in T2. In the meantime, another trick would be to go to the folder the factory presets are in, select them all, right click, and set the 'properties' to be read-only.

Seems to me that helps. I can't remember for sure what else I did... took a lot of fooling around, and by the time they finally displayed, I had forgotten how I did it.

Also, it should be noted:

a) if you "load Final Mix" from the menu, and manually select the factory Presets folder, they'll all appear (temporarily)

b) even if the name doesn't show up properly, the song will still remember what Final Mix's settings were, so it should still sound the way it sounded as you were tweaking, as long as you saved the edit as normal.

Naaa

Neither aproach worked I'm afraid so I'm off to bed. Maybe tomorrow I'll have better luck.

I forgot to mention that you need to re-scan your plug-in directory from scratch.

This is one of the strangest bug I've ever encountered; Finalmix presets never used to work for me, always had to load them from directory. after I had to clone my C: drive back (don't ask, long story), they started working and now they never fail. I never knew Norton Ghost fixed bugs at the same time as cloning drives :hihi:

Yes, it's a truly bizarre bug. I couldn't even guess about what causes it.

Just to be a dork, I'll say: "Perhaps its a blessing in disguise, forcing you to actually learn what is going on inside that amazing plugin".

I don't really mean it though.

I lost mine when I moved my default plugin directory onto a different drive. As soon as I put the Final Mix presets back in to the Tracktion directory plugin folder, they reappeared.

Just to clarify - I could search for them and load them from the other directory using the FM load dialogue, they just wouldn't be there to begin with. As soon as I'd loaded them in a session, they'd stay there too. I just figured that it's a topsy turvy world we live in. :?

This is just bizarre. Sorry to bump this. But I installed T2 demo on 2 machines, on one of them the Final Mix Presets appear, but on the other one they don't. Selecting "Use Default Folder" just greys out but doesn't find the plugins. I can't find any option for selecting a folder either. I've checked that the presets are in the correct directory.

Like herodotus says, it's good to just play around and learn the parameters, but it can be nice to get an insight into what options engineers have chosen for certain presets.

Yeah, I think finalmix is a little deep, and a little too focussed in purpose, for happy accident style experimenting.

Which Final Mix are you using? The original blue one, or the new one that comes with the T2 demo?

Try the T2 version if you're not already: I believe the presets issue has been addressed (I haven't run into it anyway, but it was always intermittent over here) and there is also a fix for a bug in the EQ section of the first version (The wrong frequencies were boosted at high sample-rates)

(The following relates to the PC version)

I'll add that I've not run into preset problems since using the new T2 'grey' version of Final Mix. I've even been able to re-locate the plug from its usual home in the default Tracktion default plug-ins folder to my shared plug-ins folder, which I couldn't do with the T1 version.

What I have noticed is that the preset folder *needs* to be in the same directory as the plug, so wherever the Final Mix plug is located, there should be a sub folder called 'Final Mix Presets' (this folder name also needs to be exact), that also contains two sub-folders - 'Factory Presets' & 'User Presets'. Additionally, make sure the factory presets are, of course, in the 'Factory Presets' folder.

Hope this helps,

Hmn, I must've got confused with T1, presets seem to be fine. I had a previous Tracktion project with Final Mix that didn't find the presets so that must've been it.
