To be honest: I prefer 'women' to 'girls'... although common terminology is still girlfriend and not womanfriendCypherOne wrote:sad.soundaddik wrote:who needs girls? i'd rather edit midi than doing it

Lunatique quoth One should ALWAYS be a composer first, technoid second.
Why?
If you get that priority wrong
Who exactly decides which priority is 'right'?
then you shouldn't be calling yourself a musician--rather, call yourself a sound designer instead.
According to which authority? You?
And since when was composer a synonym for 'musician'?
Since when was 'understanding the technology' a synonym for 'sound designer'?
What a bloody ludicrous set of assumptions.

the "technoid" kid is needed inside me in order to help with musicmaking ..
..
and about the "one should always be a composer first" idea:
why?
i once had a neighbour who bought hardware after hardware, synths, synths and synths .. did he do songs or tracks? no, he just smoked his bong and grooved along with his grooveboxes and synthesizers. and i thought "pfffff .. he´s got all that gear. and where´s the music??"
but later on i just realized that he simply wasnt interested in making songs or tracks .. he just wanted to have some fun being a gearhead .. and why not?
each to his and her own ..

None of the above.Topic: Are you a composer or a technoid?
I was a technoid (or "gearhead") some time ago, at least as far as my money allowed it.
So far I'm trying to get down to just using a sampler, old records and a huge, ever-growing sample library. I haven't yet made a track that could be compared to those I made in the gearhead time, but I think I just have to accomodate to the new environment.

but if this persons feels that sounddesign as music, and therefor feels as a musician .. will you stand there telling him/her "you arent a musician!" ?Lunatique wrote:One should ALWAYS be a composer first, technoid second. so you think there's some sort of universal 'priority' do you jens? no surprise there then.

yes, I know a lot of people like this and it's absolutely o.k. like this of course...
but I think Lunatique was more referring to people who are creating an output as a method of communicating with others...
b.t.w.: I love the technical stuff as well!

no, I just think we need more melodies than soundfx...whyterabbyt wrote:so you think there's some sort of universal 'priority' do you jens? no surprise there then.

oh, and one important point: the technical stuff you use will most probably be outdated a few years later. The beautyful melodies you compose however will never really age.

jens quoth
no, I just think we need more melodies than soundfx...
So are you claiming that someone who prioritises the more technical side is incapable of producing melody?
Because you certainly have agreed with Lunatique's assrtion of what people should do, and that people who dont prioritise the way he insists they should are somehow only producing one kind of output.

nonono - you got it wrong - that was not what I meant - but I think if someone prioritises the techniocal stuff above the composing itself the danger is given that due to this prioritising he doesn't care enough for the melodies... - that of course has got nothing to do with ability - we've been speaking about priority , right?whyterabbyt wrote:jens quoth

What has that to do with capability?
It's a dirty trick there that you try to put something into my mouth I didn't say in the least.
Anyway: think what you want to think about me or my opinion. Look at my signature...
The sun is shining outside and I'm unwilling to spend a single further minute in front of my machine to lead a fruitlessdiscussion with you just because I made the mistake to simply write 'I agree' when I agreed with someone.
