i have a p4 3.2, 1 gig of ram, 800fsb. im using the 1640 onyx with tracktion 1.
my question is, what should i set my paging file at in the virtual memory? it's at like 1536 or something now. should it be more or less than this? i seem to remember that there was another number entered in that dialog when i first got my optimized computer from the company that sold it to me as part of my pro tools rig.
and i called once after a reformat and they made me put it at that setting again. what's the deal with page file settings and DAW usage? what should i do there?
im having a little perfomance weirdness. im getting garbled crap and little blips with lower latency settings. how is this happening when i have like a top end machine that's not even a year old?
my drives arent the fastest, but im using a firewire 7200 external to try to combat that.
sould i daisy chain the firewire drive from the other onyx firewire port? or would that cause a bottleneck of bandwidth?
should i get a cardbus firewire card? how much performance boost would i get from better hard drives?
i have two inside the lappy. two 60's, at 5400rpm.
i set the latency pretty much half way and it's fine, a little on the lower side and it's fine, but with interitten blips that are almost inaudible.
my computer is a sager 5670 with a gig of ram upgrade and the ati 9600 mobility radeon with 128 ram.
my wifi card is a motorola. i take it out when doing audio. i don't think that's it.
man...i used to be able to do 16 channels of live recording into pro tools with no problems. what's different with this app that makes it more difficult to record 16 tracks? i mean, all im trying to do is record. editing is where you get into trouble. not recording. so i don't understand what the deal is?
i should be able to record 16 simultaneous channels with a firewire connection set at 44.1. and with considerably good latency. i shouldn't have to set this thing at high latency.
are there tweaks i need to do? don't stop there, are there any other things that ou could think of that i could do to improve performance of a machine with tracktion?
im going to do 5-7 tracks of drums tomorrow morning, and i hope this thing will be able to do that. if not, im fired.
good night, i need some rest before the dirty deed tomorrow. wish me luck.
im very new to computer recording. im an old analog guy. this shit is so very foriegn to me.
i just need a little guidance to get back up to speed.

Why do you need low latency to record live? Surely you can set your latency to a nice high (safe) value to record the sets, then drop it lower for more responsive mixing?
Anyway, unless you plan to play softsynths from a MIDI input, or record guitars while monitoring through amp simulators, you don't really need it that fast: 20 ms is easily good enough to record mix automation in real-time IMO.

I have:
Start | Run | Sysdm.cpl
I also run all the usual software like web, email, CD burning, antivirus, etc. See below for a list of services. Anything not listed is not running, and is set to either Disabled or Manual startup.
