eq is more than a corrective tool, you can make things larger than life. i agree though you do not need tons on eq on every channel, you might not need any, but sometimes you can use it even if the original signal sounds fine as it is (12k+ boost on vocals for instance)gareth_fx wrote:Or you could learn to get the sound right at source and stop using Eq!!!!
To many people seem to resort to processing because they feel they must purely because they can! Learn to use Eq to cut rather than boost and youll soon be a happier bunny.

on the subject of EQs, are there any reasonably priced passive EQs based on the pultec design (like manley massive passive)?

I got to play with a SSL desk the day before yesterday, it had both E and G series channels (12 x G and 24 x E ). I thought the EQ on it was not anything special. It was ok for correction but definately no super EQ. Well, as others have said, the master out compressor IS superb. It can glue a mix together even when the gain reduction needle is barely moving! It's a beautiful desk though. Suprisingly easy to navigate and set up several different headphone mixes for the musicians. It only took me about 30 minutes to get my head around the basic opertaion of the mixer.
In the same session I also got to play with the EMT 140 plate and a 1178 Stereo Compressor!
.. well what can I say? I want all that equipment so feel free to donate a few 100k$ to me.
