You've missed something.

Or you're using a colour scheme in which the creator inadvertently buried the grid colours.

You could try sticking a midi clip behind the audio clip. Works nicely in 1.6.

I do that already. it's not exactly comfortable.

yes please. at the very least make an option to turn on/off a grid. when snap is off, its hard to line up clips unless you move the track to the top and use the ruler as a guide.
