T2 Sync problems

I was really excited for the T2 demo because of its MTC sync abilities, but now I'm having trouble getting it to work. I click the padlock, and it seems to sync okay when I'm just doing playback, but when I click the "Record" button it jumps around in time and does pretty much everything but sync...anyone else have this problem? Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I'm syncing it to a portable recorder so that I can transfer tracks to Tracktion (I'm slowly phasing out my old recorder in favor of a computer-based recording setup). Tracktion is set as slave.

Try setting Tracktion as master if you can.. I tested T2's sync with my VS880, and it seemed OK, but I don't actually use the VS for anything these days, so maybe I missed something..

Unfortunately I can't set it as a master with my recorder, as far as I know. There's some midi clock option separate from MTC, but I've never been able to figure that out. I've had no troubles with this slave sync setup on most software, so that makes the problem even more puzzling...

I just ran a quick test.. apart from the usual slight glitch when you drop into record it seems to work fine..
Do you have the same frame-rate set for both devices? Tracktion offers 24, 25 or 30 fps options.. if your recorder is fixed to one of those, set Tracktion to the same. If that is switchable too then it doesn't really matter which you use so long as they're the same on both machines..
Also, if the problem only starts when you record, have you tried setting an auto punch-in?

MIDI clock is tempo based. Useful for syncing sequencers or grooveboxes, but for an audio recorder time-code is probably a better bet..igglebop wrote: There's some midi clock option separate from MTC, but I've never been able to figure that out.

Have you tried recording several tracks, to see if they then sync up with each other? On one test I recorded the same sample onto two separate tracks, and the alignment ranged from several frames to a few seconds--terrible for any real sync work. Same thing when I use auto punch-in. I've experimented setting both recorder and Tracktion to 24 frames, 30 frames, etc. but still no go.platinumears wrote:I just ran a quick test.. apart from the usual slight glitch when you drop into record it seems to work fine..
I discovered that setting "Return cursor to start" to Off helped a little bit (before, sometimes clicking "record" while sync'd would start a new recording from the beginning!).
Am I the only one experiencing this?

I'll try it & let you know.. (My VS880 hasn't seen this much action for years!)

Ok. It seems Tracktion has some difficulties syncing as a slave..
I got the impression that pressing any transport controls breaks the sync.. including record, which is a bit of a bummer. What should happen (IMO) is that pressing record when slaved to MTC should put T into record-pause until the play command is sent. I'll send in a bug report..
Meanwhile, are you certain that your recorder can't slave? What exactly is it? FWIW I got pretty good results doing it the other way round with Tracktion as master: This clip is 4 bars of drums, the first 2 bars on its own, the second 3 different recordings of the same part layered together: there's some phasing, but I don't think you get much better with MIDI sync..
If you can't do that, there's a workaround (Don't worry, it doesn't involve racks!
)
I'm guessing the machine you are syncing to is a digital multitracker of some sort? If so it probably has basic editing facilities? All those assumptions being valid, edit a bit of clear space at the front of your song, record a single short transient noise (clapping into a mic will do) and edit it to the start of every track on the multi tracker. You can now record everything over to Tracktion (1 or 2
) and use the transient to line them all up again. If you zoom in nice and tight it should be easy to do, and when you're happy simply slip-edit the starts of the files.

Alright, well I'm glad it's not a problem with my hardware, but that's disappointing that it's a bug. Hopefully they'll come out with a fix soon enough.
My recorder is a Boss BR1180. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have slave capabilities, but I do have another workaround--I can use my old copy of Cool Edit Pro to sync up the tracks, like I have in the past, then import them into Tracktion and adjust the start offset (using the numbers Cool Edit gives me) so they're accurately aligned. I think this oughta work.
Thanks for all your help, and for submitting the bug report!

this got posted elsewhere by mistake...
new to traktion, just got the version 2 demo...
i really like the interface, however have some problems with midi machine control and syncing,(slaving), to an external sequencer, (or slaving the external sequencer to traktion)...midi filter doesn't seem to work either, can't seem to record multiple channels of midi... is midi a problem with version #1 as well? audio records perfectly though...
running a 2.66Ghz pentium 4 box with 1.12 GB of ram,
and an m-audio 1010 sound card... i'd really like to get this to work, version 1 or 2, but i work with alot of midi prior to recording audio...

If cooledit can save bwavs, Tracktion2 can auto-time align the imported audio.igglebop wrote:then import them into Tracktion and adjust the start offset (using the numbers Cool Edit gives me) so they're accurately aligned. I think this oughta work.

Midi in Traction isn't the best.Especially with external midi gear!!! I wont bother with T2 for months and months yet untill I know that the bugs have been firmly ironed out.
Go with something like Cubase if you need MIDI!!
A Production package will never be all things to all people...YOu need to decide whats important to you and make a sacrafice....
If you want to use T2 you might have to sacrafice being able to sync using MTC or decent MIDI for a while and go to a PRO Studio and get them to dump the wav's to a CD for ya...!!!
