Hi all

Ive been using free Tracktion for a couple of months now, I originally got it because I wanted to record some midi tracks and import the wavs into Cakewalk GT3, which doesnt support midi.

And then one day I decided to record a couple of audio tracks in Tracktion...... :o I havent used cakewalk since.

And for one reason in particular, something I havent seen discussed in here, and that is the sound quality, my acoustic guitar is sounding so much better in tracktion than it ever did in cakewalk, its also great for vocals.

Tracktion has crashed on me a couple of times,(probably due to my mis handling) and it has a bug or two, but I will willingly put up with a minor inconvenience, for the all important, 'Tracktion sound' :D ....

On to my question, Ive just installed Sonik synth 2 free, but Tracktion is not finding it, when I checked the sonik synth folder in program files, I find it doesnt contain a .dll file, I thought all vst instruments and effects use .dll files :?

Anyone else out there using Sonik synth?

I don't use it as such, but I installed it the other day to test something.. seemed to go smoothly. Are you sure its "program files" you should be looking in? It doesn't really matter where you store your plug-in .dll files so long as point Tracktion to the relevant directory in the settings page, and re-scan.

I seem to remember that the installer has two stages for picking the directories: one for the sounds and one for the engine (the .dll)

try searching your drive for "sonik*.dll" to see where it ended up, then add that directory path in Tracktion's plugin config and rescan for new plugins

also, you might be interested to know that the people involved in the making of Sonik Synth 2 have a forum here on KVR: the Sonic Reality forum

The sonik folder contains sounds, preset, and pref folders, also 2 files .vpa and .xrs, but no .dll

As havran suggested, it seems the dll has gone astray somewhere on my hard drive, I will now attempt to find it.

havran, thanks for sonik forum tip, Ill take a look over there.

thanks for the help guys :band2:

try your defalt vst directry?
c:/program files/stinberg/vstplugins

or if you installed another vst app & dont have cubase or installed cubase after, then try the folder for your main vst host

I used to have a steinberg vst default folder which contained some effects or instruments that I never used, so I got rid of them and the folder, I have since created a vst plugins folder where I place all the dlls that I download from kvr, perhaps sonik is looking for that folder.

I did a search, and it said the sonik dll was in my vst folder, it was not, so I dragged it out of the search window and into my vst folder, and then ran tracktion....*^!x</!! oops,.... software not installed correctly,... fatal error,... damage may have already been done to your system,... do you wish to continue,...tracktion may become unstable,... rewire failure,.... I closed out, and went and made myself a cup of tea.

Im on thin ice with this thing, but Im not ready to give up,
'I want this synth'

thanks for the help

If the search said it was in your VST folder, then that it where it is, surely?.

I would put the files back where they were. Then run the search again, right-click the .dll, select Open Containing Folder,
- you will then see everything that is in that folder,
- you may need to Display Hidden File types (in Windows Explorer, Tools >> Folder Options >> View, then click Show Hidden Files and Folders) to see the .dll files,
- check the plugin path names that you have in Tracktion.

The Sonik Synth 2 installation puts files in several places:
- my .dll is in C:\Program Files\VST Plugins\Samplers
- the program files, sounds, pdf etc are in C:\Program Files\IK Multimedia\Sonik Synth 2 Free
- the shortcuts (to the Licence and the manual) are in C:\Documents and Settings\Simon\Start Menu\Programs\Sonik Synth 2 Free

keep on trying, I am sure you will love it when you get there.

Darkstar, I was astonished to find that the dll was not in the vst folder, I scrolled very carefully through the folder several times.

I will now follow your instructions, and see what happens.

The more I cant have this thing,..the more I want it.

many thanks for the help
