I think the guitar IS actually meant to be preamplified in one way or the other. It's just not supposed to be colored at all - which (as said above) seems to be the most critical stage in order to maintain your guitar's individual tone while at the same time not adding noise and coloration.
Recording Hi-Z instrument levels without a dedicated input would just be as stupid as it could get, for the very reasons luka described.

That was the VERY setup I've been using several years ago (mid to end 80s or so). I still have the TS-808 (first edition of them all) but sold the Marshall when I thought I had to play some fusion stuff and needed something more "flexible" - what a wrong decision, several rigs I used after that just sounded like poo (while being freaking expensive). Let alone the music didn't sound much better either...
I sold the Marshall for like 200 DM (around 100 Euro), sheeeeeesh!
ROFL, I traded mine for one of the Earth "Orange" amps for the exact same reason. If I was a stork I'd kick myself in the ass.

Speaking of cheap DIs for guitar, let me tell you that I recently had a lots of fun with M-audio audiobuddy mic preamp/DI. This is really nice piece of gear and very cheap too. For those looking for DI and micpre on budget I can suggest to give audiobuddy test ride. I suppose there are better dedicated guitar DIs on market but I think audiobuddy is the best-for-bang solution when it comes to micpre/DI combo preamps.

I have the big brother of AudioBuddy, the M-Audio DMP3. It's really great as DI box (very quiet in noise !!).

I have it too and I second that

Just one notice re audiobuddy,

its phantom power does not provide full 48V for condernser mics. IIRC it is around 43V which is fine for most of todays condenser mics but nevertheless...

If thats critical for your application then consider M-audio DMP-3 or Studio Projects VTB-1, also very fine and affordable solutions. I am sure that with proper guitar DI Midiworks plugin (or any other software amp) will sound million times better.

cheers

Yeah, that mysterious Midiworks amp plug-in that no one has tried yet. It's been quiet here for a while I wonder how his project is progressing.

Hi Midiworks!

Any interesting news about your amp? Can we download a Demo 'soon'? If yes, how you define 'soon'

Cheers,

Yeah, I'm, curious about this too. When can we expect a demo Midiman??

News:
The new amp stage is finished.
(Actually I build 2)
This on is giving the extra "kick" for a more modern sound.

Replaced the old chorus with a quite amazing new one !
This one can also be switched to phaser/flanger.
(This one is so nice and warm sounding,
that I am thinking about a seperate release.;) )

So, thats it for now. :)

Now I need some new guitar takes, so you can hear
the new sound capabilities. :hail:
