jepp, please NO notation in tracktion. it's way too much to code. maby in t4. there are many other things that should be implemented first. and there are some programs out that will do it much better because they do nothing else (sibelius...) and the marked for that isn't that big anymore. imho.
i need a lunch break

I agree with the sentiment that it shouldn't be included unless it can be implemented as a state-of-the-art notation editor. Too many sequencers include weak notation support which, I doubt, get's any real developer attention at all. I imagine it's grudgingly included in Cubase, and the developers would rather not have it in Sonar at all.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great suggestion, I love written notation (and do alot of composing in Melody Assistant) but it would have to be very robust and/or have a tolerance setting which could compensate for humanisation so that the script didn't appear as a mass of hemi-demi-semi quavers (as I think koolkeys was pointing to).

Why burden T2/3/4 ?
It's just another layer of cpu cycle stealing.
Just export the midi and use an editor dedicated to notation.
I use NWC with T. Works fine doesn't impair my already high cpu usage in Tracktion. What's up with that anyway ??
Tracktion sits at 40-50% with NO, 0, NADA notes being played and transport off ?? (T2) Then while playing it will hit the 100% mark and stutter then drop back to 60-70%.
Exported audio is fine and has no stutters or problems. It is just while Recording/Playing inside the app.
While the EXACT SAME setup in N-Track Studio v4 MAXES at 75% and never stutters. (Peak cpu loading) And when not doing anything....0% cpu load.
Setup in this instance is 3 synths, SIR and Acuma/Mackie FinalMix.
I use Tracktion over NT because NT doesn't handle recording as well or in as straight forward a manner as Tracktion(insert your version # here) as well as other smaller but nice features in Tracktion.

I have Sibelius 3, so I hardly need a notation editor in Tracktion in order to produce scores. But as a classically trained musician I would find it useful as another way of entering MIDI data.
I think that Garageband 2 provides a perfect illustration of how well this can be implemented still within a single screen view.
More importantly, i think that having some notation would add a lot to the appeal of Tracktion in the education market. Most music teachers have a classical training, and would feel much more comfortable with a notation opton.
[OT: Now I realise I keep banging on about this, but it seems to me there is a difference between the USA and Europe in how computer music software find success. In the USA the emphasis is on glossy advertising in the specialist press, having a boxed version in the local Guitar Shop, and buying home-grown product. In Europe there is a recognition that people tend to stick with what they know... hence software companies such as Steinberg and Propellerhead go overboard targetting the educational market. Most teenagers in the UK have at least heard of Cubase, and probably Reason, even if they have little interest in music at all, because the educational sector has made these programs household names here.
As a US company, I don't think Mackie have fully investigated the potential that this european approach offers yet... and here's why:
I am the author of a series of bestselling keyboard tutor book, have spoken at several major conferences here inthe UK, and had articles published in several magazines and a national newspaper. I have repeatedly offered to put my reputation behind Tracktion and promote into this sector. Beno has been very supportive in pushing this, and seems as disappointed as me that Mackie have stonewalled the whole concept over several months now. ]

That's also a good idea which would be a time-saver for those of us who have notation software (freeware or otherwise).semiquaver wrote:A VERY simple/powerful and nice solution Might be for Jules to provide an "export MIDI as abc" feature - bring it into lillypad or one of the many other free clients and you're there.
At the moment the functionality is there but you have to export as a midi file and then import into (Sibelius). And vice-versa, of course.
It's true that MIDI files originated in the sequencer usually look dreadful in notation. It works better the other way around!

thing is tho, garageband is based on logic, and logic has had scoring for years and years, and so isn't a simple 'lets add scoring'..
it would definitely be a LOT of work for jules to put in scoring, and would not benefit that many people i'm sure (tho that could probably be argued) but it's work that has pretty much nothing to do with tracktion; developing that feature would take.. SOO much effort, and noone else would care about it or get any kind of benefit..
and it's very likely to just be a 'not particularly great' notation system, which the people who want to use it would probably complain about, and then end up having to use other software anyway. i seriously think it's for the best that T doesn't put it in.

I hear what you're saying haydxn, and from a practical point of view I agree with you. But from a comercial point of view, Tracktion is competing with Garageband, Cubasis, Magix, etc, which all have notation. If Mackie are committed to this they need to consider it, at least.haydxn wrote:thing is tho, garageband is based on logic, and logic has had scoring for years and years, and so isn't a simple 'lets add scoring'..

If Jules can't read notation, he's obviously not the man to program it. But there's no doubt in my mind that he would benefit from helpers anyway, and that Mackie should employ one or two programmers alongside Jules to take the vision further. ModuLR's ability to fix the 2-year old MIDI bug in an afternoon rather proves that

I, as I've said, still don't want the notation editor. It would be too taxing on Jules time, and it's not really necessary with all the options available nowadays. But I still think it would be cool for someone to make a plug-in that would do basic notation. But again, it's NOT a necessity.
No notation in Tracktion.

Do I really *have* to keep repeating myself? It is *not* a bug. Tracktion was doing something that could be considered to be basically useful. This causes a bunch of poorly written plugins to fall over themselves.headquest wrote: fix the 2-year old MIDI bug in an
Where is the bug that was fixed?

i think you need to calm down a bit there indiQa...
less on the caps; he was referring to the fact that FinalMix (as included with Tracktion) will only work with Tracktion. you obviously have a different version.

I beleive platinumears is refering to the FinalMix plugin in your setup, which is a Tracktion only plugin and therefore can't be used in N-Track.
