If you're using the asio driver with tracktion, then more than likely you'll have to use a different driver with the audio editor (wdm, directsound etc, assuming you're on windows). ASIO will only let one app access the driver at a time, so if Tracktion's still open, it's got hold of the driver.

I've found that doesn't work for me, probably because of the grumpy bugger of a sound card I have (Terratec Phase 22), which I'm going to junk as soon as the Golden Goose shits in my letter box. I have to change the setting in Tracktion first (ie set Tracktion to Direct Sound before I send the clip out to the external editor)and then open up the audio editor with the ASIO driver. Either way, it works, but it's a pain.

I believe what he was saying was that you should set your AUDIO editor by default to use a different driver. Since you're editing and not recording in realtime, ASIO won't offer you any advantages in the editor program the same way it will in Tracktion.

So,

Tracktion - ASIO
Editor - WDM or whatever

for once i have an advantage here as a laptop user ... my little echo indigo sound card has multi-client ASIO drivers that fool my audio apps into thinking i have 4 different ASIO cards on my machine so i can have T2 set to out 1+2 ... audition on 3+4 ... ez-editor on 5+6 ... and switch between them seamlessly (the card mixes all the virtual outs down to the single physical stereo out using its own ickle DSP chip too) ...

... im SURE some other soundcard drivers must be capable of this too ???
