Why is the level meter and its slider separate items?

When I see one of my levels getting a bit on the high side I click on the vu meter and it opens up in the larger view at the bottom.
When I want to adjust it I have to select the input level slider which then replaces the vu meter but it means that I can't see the level I am setting until I click the vu meters again. :?
I guess this is normal for Tracktion but doesn't seem as intuitive as the rest of this fine program.
Will T2 have the level and vu on the same plugin?
How do you guys manage or am I the only one to find this irritating.

there is a volume slider in the context sensitive panel when you click a volume filter.

I think the idea behind the "level meter" filter is that you can put it in different places to see the level at different points- pre gder or post etc - pretty neat actually. But you make a good point...

there's also a little 'padlock' icon on the properties panel (topleft of it, just next to the name). click that, and that particular panel will stay even if you select something else.

hope this helps
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

Also be aware that red lights on a channel meter don't mean it has clipped: Tracktion uses 32-bit floats (or better) which provide large amounts of headroom so, unless you render a track, the only place you need to worry about "overs" is the master out.

Post

yeah, a common mis-conception seems to be that you can clip the internal bus. You can't!

"Large" amounts of headroom is not the word for it. Enormous would be a better start. Your internal bus is capable of handling signals many thousands of times hotter than standard digital max.

The only levels that truly matter are the ones attached to your input devices, and the ones attached to your outputs.

That would be called a bug. Contact the plugin developer and tell them to fix it.

That said, that's precisely *why* Tracktion allows you to place level meters whereever you want.

So the small track meter is ok to let go into the red as long as the main level meters arent pushed too hard?
Is this correct?

Yes, correct. Inputs and outputs are the only places red lights matter..
