FR audio clip/track 'speed' automation

I'd love the ability to vary the playback speed (and thus, pitch) of an audio clip over time using an envelope.
(extra neat, but probably more tricky to implement would be the ability to have a bipolar scale on the envelope, then values of less that 0 would correspond to reversed clip playback)

i've certainly wanted to change the speed over time on a clip. most of the music i make is made by dragging clips around on the edit page, and using say, a single sample of an elastic band twang to play melodies, pitching it by ALT-stretching the clip.
it would be great to have some kind of envelope control on the clip to vary the speed.. perhaps like the fade markers, but i can't think of how it could possibly work; if you change the envelope shape, the clip length will also change too, which will be some seriously wacky behaviour!
i wonder..

hatdxn, when you mention an elastic band, I get a picture of you snapping your underware in front of a mic!
But I think I have the same kind of philosophy it looks like you have--I like to try different things to see what happens. I heart Tracktion for this!

er..
don't take that the wrong way too, now!

A difficulty i suppose would be maintaining an accurate graphic representation of the audio clip if it had a pitch envelope applied..
Ideally the clip graphic would dynamically redraw itself when an envelope was applied, reflecting the new overall length (maybe with a special marker/colour to indicate that the clip has a pitch envelope aplied)
Even better: the clip graphic wouls update itself with an accurate waveform display incorporating the new pitch variations..
but for me, accurate graphic representation of the wave in the pitched clip wouldnt be necessary.

a bit of a clunky way to implement it but heres a possibility:

edit:
some explanation, when editing a pitch envelope (accessed through audio clip context menu? shortcut key?), the affected clip would expand to its 'natural' size (pre-envelope adjustment.. incase it already had a pitch envelope attached).. this way the envelope could be drawn such a way that would allow the user to synchronise peaks and slopes in the repitching envelope with certain 'landmarks' in the waveform if necessary (like the way the offline pitch envelope thingy works in audition).
When pitch envelope editing is finished, the user would click some kind of button which would return them to normal editing mode, as well as swapping the graphic representation of the pitched clip to a graphic that takes into account the new post-envelope-length of the clip, and also indicates that the clip has a pitch envelope attached.

it would be excellent. currently i use a sort of wacky 'lego' style workaround to do 'bends' in pitch, but it's nowhere near as effective as that kindof envelope thing, which is something i'd love to see.
atm what i do is make lots of little parts, and gradually pitch each one slightly higher, and then crossfade them together. yes, it's f*cking mental and a lot of effort... kinda like a manual hand-crafting granular approach.
i guess i'm a little masochistic like that tho because i really enjoy it
i'd LOVE to see a workable version of this idea tho

currently i'm exporting to a external editor, doing a dsp pitch envelope operation on a copy of the audio and re-importing.. big hassle though.. i'd use pitch envelope stuff alot more in my tracks if it were simple to achieve, im lazy that way.

Alternative idea: (which i think i might prefer).. which ties in with some of the ideas about proposed automation clips.. In addition to the normal automation targets that would show up when adding automation to a clip, there would be an extra target. Something like 'Track 1 Audio Speed' (for example).
Each track would have its own automatable 'Audio Speed' parameter, which would govern how quickly that track's audio clips played back at any given moment.
This would mean that you wouldnt be able to independantly pitch bend two overlapping audio clips on the same track.. but it'd have the advantage over the first suggestion by being quicker to use (i think). The details depends on how clip automation is implemented (if it is).

its a neat idea - in practice it can be difficult to control the durations in a way which is musically useful.
Check out soundhack www.soundhack.com which has a neat implementation of this idea (mac only?)

yeah mac only i think..
i know what you mean about controlling durations.. but for my style of production, that wouldn't be necessary. for me it would be a huge time saver in the form described above (even if it didnt display the modified durations at all).

yeah!
a pitch envelope on the clip would be very nice...
i'd add a 'range' option (+/- 1 halftone or +/- 96 halftones etc...)
great cbit..my dear bro
