BT's also great for getting the increasingly large game demos. Normal servers typically can't keep up with my download bandwidth, or else you have to put up with a queue, or pay a monthly fee.
While it's not technically legal, I don't feel too guilty downloading TV episodes of my favorite shows, since I'll almost certainly be buying them on DVD later anyway.

BitTorrent is awesome for decentralising downloads. There's a reason to why bands has started using it to share their tunes with others
The big companies like microsoft etc should be interested in using BT, but I guess they aren't, because it's mainly used for warezing.

BT is great. And its a shame that 90% of it is warez. I only really download mp3's that arent commerically available. And if I Do download illegally, I usually buy the CD later on. (like I downloaded then bought Brian Wilsons Smile recently).

I'm interested to see if Bittorrent could be used to distribute large amounts of sample data - say you want to sell a rompler, at the moment there's no choice but to ship a CD to the customer. Have to wonder if something like Bittorrent could be used to distribute a CD's worth of content online.
Does anyone have any experience with setting up trackers etc.? are there any ways in which a tracker can authenticate (username/password?) a downloader?

I guess with Bittorrent though (authentication aside) the problem would be persuading people to keep the rompler files seeded afterwards to speed up downloads for other customers - if there's only one seeder, or the torrent isn't very popular, I guess it isn't going to be that much faster or easier on the bandwidth than a straight FTP/HTTP download.

That's correct. But really, do you think the unpopular downloads causes a bandwidth issue?

I wouldn't be too sure about it, I mean...there's always lots of people keeping tv episodes and such on their hd for sharing. Why, is beyond me.Muon Software Ltd wrote:I guess with Bittorrent though (authentication aside) the problem would be persuading people to keep the rompler files seeded afterwards to speed up downloads for other customers - if there's only one seeder, or the torrent isn't very popular, I guess it isn't going to be that much faster or easier on the bandwidth than a straight FTP/HTTP download.

Putting in because they get out I guess. Basicly, they are "part" of a warez community in a way. If no-one seeded, they wouldn't have been able to leech their tv shows. So they feel that they too should seed when they leech. Seems kinda logical to me, a nice behaviour within the illegal behaviour.soulata wrote:I wouldn't be too sure about it, I mean...there's always lots of people keeping tv episodes and such on their hd for sharing. If people could be persuaded to keep the content seeded for a bit, then the only problem to solve is authentication. How do you make sure that only paying customers get the torrent file, and how do you make sure that only those who got the torrent file legally (ie not a copy passed on by their mates) can get the content.
In our case, I'm not too worried about piracy of the content because all Tachyon content is encrypted and useless without the matching player (which would be shipped seperately). I'd just be worried that "curious" downloaders would steal away bandwidth from legit users.
Does anyone know about adding authentication to a tracker? I've seen some torrents that require registration at a website before they will work, does anyone know if that is easy to do?

It's probably fairly easy to do, you could probably ask some admin at a torrent site req login?
